Welcome to our Wednesday’s broadcast of
the Gospel truth today I’m continuing to
teach verse by verse through the book of
Hebrews we’re now into Hebrews chapter 3
and verse 11 I’ve already covered a lot
of material so I encourage you to please
get this book that we’re offering this
is my digital living commentary where
I’ve written footnotes on over 27,000
verses out of the U 31,000 verses in the
Bible so there’s there’s less than 4,000
verses uh that I haven’t written a
commentary on but we’ve taken the
commentary from Hebrews 1 through 13 and
we put it into this 223 page hardbound
book and we are asking for a suggested
donation of $25 the reason I say
suggested is because we won’t deny it to
people who give less but we ask you to
give something for it and that’s what we
really need in order to cover our cost
and then we have CDs and DVDs and a USB
that also goes along with it we’ve put
out millions of books CS booklets things
like this and uh we couldn’t do that if
people didn’t give something so we just
ask you to give what you can and praise
God uh we’ll believe God to supply the
extra so we are now in Hebrews chapter 3
and in verse 11 let me just say that he
went back and quoted Psalms chapter 95
and went and showed how that he brought
the children of Israel out of the land
of Egypt but he never intended for them
to spend 40 years in the wilderness he
wanted to bring them into the promised
land but they hardened their
heart man that is I’ve got an entire
teaching on this about Hardness of Heart
I’ve got a book on it CDs DVDs if you
haven’t gotten that you can go to our
website and get it but man a hardened
Heart Makes You spiritually dull it
makes you to where you can’t understand
things that’s what it says in Mark
chapter 8 you can’t perceive you can’t
understand you can’t remember and you
know this is absolutely true of the
average Christian that they just can’t
perceive spiritual things they they can
can get carnal things but they just
can’t get spiritual things you know why
because their heart is
hardened man I could preach on that but
I have an old series on that so anyway
he had just warned them don’t Harden
your heart and he said that because they
refused and because they wouldn’t be
sensitive to the Lord but instead they
were letting their feelings their
emotions dominate them they lusted for
food they got upset because they didn’t
have water and things like this he says
in verse 11 so I swear in my wrath they
shall not enter into my rest now he’s
laying the foundation the groundwork for
a teaching that he’s going to expound on
in the next chapter in Hebrews chapter 4
and I’m going to talk about that about a
Sabbath rest but right here he mentions
that the Lord intended to bring the
Israelites out of Egypt into a place
that he called his rest and this isn’t a
physical location it’s not anything
physical it’s a spiritual condition
where you are resting in the Lord
instead of striving trying to get God to
do something you are resting in what
he’s already done and so that’s what he
said in verse 11 in verse 12 he said
take heed Brethren lest there be in any
of you an evil heart of unbelief and
departing from the Living God and again
if you were to go back and take this in
the context of the verses that he had
just quoted he talked about hardening
your heart now here he is talking about
having an evil heart of unbelief and
he’s using these terms interchangeably a
person with a hardened heart is a person
that has an evil heart of
unbelief and man nobody wants to be like
that how do you keep from doing that it
says that this evil heart of unbelief
will cause you to depart from the Living
God and again I could refer to this
teaching where I go into a lot more
detail but basically your heart becomes
sensitive to whatever you focus your
attention on and it automatically starts
becoming insensitive or hardened towards
what you don’t focus on and again if I
had time to go through this whole
teaching this doesn’t mean that you
don’t know what the script scripture
says you might even be able to quote a
scripture but if that scripture isn’t
having as much sway over you as what
you’re seeing for instance here’s an
example the Bible says by his stripes
you are healed he heals all of our
sickness all of our diseases that’s what
God’s word says but if a doctor says
you’ve got cancer and what the doctor
says dominates you and your thoughts
more than what the word says then you’ve
got an evil heart of unbelief you are
hardened towards God you might still be
able to quote the scripture that by his
stripes we were healed 1 Peter 2:24 but
that scripture isn’t dominating you as
much as what the doctor says that’s
because you are focused more in the
natural realm than you are the spiritual
realm and it’s a process it takes time
to retool yourself to recondition
yourself to where you are letting God’s
word be more real to you than what you
can see taste hear smell and feel that’s
my whole teaching about Hardness of
Heart Is man that’s a great teaching I
need to do that more often because uh
that’s something that I deal with on a
regular basis so again verse 12 says
take heed Brethren lest there be in any
of you an evil heart of unbelief in
departing from the Living God if God
tells you to take heed and make sure
this doesn’t happen that’s because you
have the ability to do it some people
think I can’t help it what the the
doctor said this how can I sit there and
get to we what God’s word says is more
real than what the doctor says well if
you say that you can’t do it well then
in a sense you’re saying that when God
tells you to take heed to keep this evil
heart from coming well then he’s unjust
he’s demanding something of you that you
can’t give and that’s not true you can
do what God told you to do but you can’t
do it necessarily just sitting there in
front of the TV watching as the stomach
turns and eating Bond bonds all the time
and not getting into the word of God not
studying the word of God you have to put
forth some effort matter of fact in the
next chapter when he starts talking
about this sabbath rest he will
specifically talk about let’s labor to
enter into this rest that sounds
contradictory if you’re going to rest
you don’t labor to rest but when you’re
talking about a spiritual rest to where
you get to where you just you are
controlled by what Jesus has done and
you aren’t controlled by what the
negative things in this world are
telling you you have to labor
to enter into a place of rest to where
you don’t get anxious and worried and
have fear about all of these things it
takes some effort in order to get this
working in your life but it’s well worth
the effort in verse 13 here’s one of the
ways you keep this evil heart of
unbelief you keep from being hardened
towards God verse 13 says you exhort one
another daily while it is called today
lest any of you be hardened through the
deceitful of sin so one of the ways that
we keep oursel in tune spiritually and
plugged into God is through relationship
with other members in the body you know
it goes on to say that we are not
supposed to forsake the assembling of
ourselves together as a manner of some
is but we’re supposed to even get
together more as we see the day
approaching as things get worse and
worse the body of Christ needs to get
closer and closer and so one of the ways
that we keep our our heart in tuned to
God is through fellowship with Believers
now that that’s not limited to going to
a church building and going to what we
call church but church is just uh you
know Jesus said in Matthew chapter 18
where two or three are gathered together
there am I in the midst of you so
anytime you get two uh Believers
together Christ is there in the midst
and this is just talking about
Fellowship now it can be done in church
and through small groups and through
things like that but it’s not limited to
just an official church service this is
just Believers getting together you know
we have 1,200 employees we have about
800 and something employees at our main
headquarters in Colorado and did you
know that we get together and we have
chapel and we talk and over lunch today
man I was visiting with some Believers
and we were talking about things and
this is how you keep your focus on the
Lord you need to be around people you
know it says in 1 Corinthians chapter 15
be not deceived evil Communications
corrupt good manners and this is just
saying that the people you hang around
with is a major influence in your life
outside of your personal relationship
with God I believe that probably your
relationship with people is the second
most important thing that you have and
if you are hanging around people who are
fearful and speaking unbelief and
blaspheming God and taking his name in
vain and talking about doing drugs or
getting drunk or even if it’s not these
overt sins if you’re just around people
who are gripers and complainers and
negative it’s going to affect you and if
you say oh no that doesn’t bother me
well it says don’t be deceived evil
Communications corrupts good manners if
you think that you can hang around
people who are negative without you
becoming negative you’re
deceived you need to be around Believers
and this is what it’s talking about we
need to exhort one another this is how
we keep our hearts from becoming uh
hardened towards God and it says lest
any of us be hardened through the
deceitfulness of sin so this verse very
clearly says that sin will harden your
heart towards God now I believe in the
grace of God the book of Hebrews is
really talking about our new covenant
Grace and it’s showing that all of our
sins have been forgiven past present and
even future sins Hebrews chapter nine
we’ll be getting to that so I believe in
the grace of God but
sin will harden your heart towards God
it doesn’t Harden God’s heart towards
you God loves you the same whether
you’re living in sin or not now I’m
talking about people who are born again
your sins have been forgiven past
present and future and God isn’t going
to love you more if you live holy he’s
not going to love you less if you don’t
live holy sin will not Harden God’s
heart towards you but sin will harden
your heart towards God that’s exactly
what Hebrews chapter 3: 13 says your
heart becomes hardened through the
deceitfulness of sin so if you are
living in sin quit it even though God is
not going to impute that sin unto you
even though he’s forgiven you of your
sins and even though your relationship
with him is guaranteed you’re just crazy
if you go live in sin because sin gives
Satan a direct inroad into your life
Romans chap 6: 16 says know ye not that
to whom ye yield yourself servant to
obey his servants you are to whom you
obey whether of sin unto death or of
obedience unto righteousness if you
yield to sin you’re Liv you’re yielding
to the person who inspired that sin the
devil in John 10:10 says the thief
cometh not but for to steal and to kill
and to destroy the Devil is only out to
steal kill and destroy and if you yield
to sin you are yielding to him and he is
going to cost you more than you want to
pay and keep you longer than you want to
stay you do not want to live in sin sin
will harden your heart towards the Lord
so quit it amen that’s so simple you
have to some have somebody help you to
misunderstand what I’m saying and yet
there are some people that are into
Grace so much that oh sin doesn’t matter
well sin won’t Harden God’s heart
towards you but it will harden your
heart towards God and so even though God
doesn’t turn away from you when you sin
you turn away from God when you sin and
if you are if you got your back towards
God you aren’t going to enjoy the
pleasure of his countenance you aren’t
going to be able to see his goodness
you’re going to be looking the other
direction and seeing all of the death
and the destruction and all the demonic
stuff and it’s going to cause depression
and discouragement not because God gave
it to you but you turned your back on
the goodness of God so if you’re living
in sin stop
it I tell you I don’t understand why
that’s hard but I’ve actually had people
who were very legalistic and they
thought that God loved them based on
whether or not they were living holy and
that’s just a burden that none of us can
bear because even though we live better
than maybe somebody else all of us have
sinned and come short of the glory of
God none of us can stand before God on
our own Merit and so when people hear me
preach about the grace of God and find
out that God loves us because he’s love
not because we’re lovely man they get so
free that they just go go the other
direction and think it doesn’t matter
what I do sin doesn’t matter God’s not
rejected me over sin well that’s true
but God’s not the only one who is
dealing with you based on sin even
though God’s not going to reject you
people will reject you and Satan will
gain access to you so some people that
I’ve introduced to Grace have gone so
far in One Direction that they just
think that sin doesn’t matter this verse
says your heart will become hardened
through the deceitfulness of sin this is
a new testament verse this is talking to
people who are born again God’s not
going to reject you because of sin but
people will sure reject you because of
sin if you treat them wrong they’ll
treat you wrongly and Satan will have an
inroad into your life so if you’re
living in sin stop it that’s so simple
you got to have somebody to help you to
misunder understand that but it’s
amazing how many people don’t get this
so he goes on to say in the next verse
for we are made partakers of Christ if
we hold the beginning of our confidence
steadfast un the end man I could spend
days on this but did you know getting
born again
starts the moment you confess Jesus as
your Lord but it’s not just a one-time
decision that you make and then you’re
saved regardless of whether you ever
give God another second
thought salvation is a progressive thing
there is a start to it it’s as simple as
the thief on the cross just saying Lord
remember me when you come into your
kingdom and Jesus promised him I today
you will be with me in Paradise he
didn’t get baptized in water he didn’t
get baptized in the Holy Spirit he
didn’t have time to pay ties he didn’t
make amends for his thing it’s that
simple but it’s not that easy you have
to mean it from your heart Romans
chapter 10 verse 9 says you have to
confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus
that’s more than just using that as a
title it means that you are submitting
yourself And So It Begins and it starts
just as simple as that thief on the
cross but this verse says that you are
made partakers of it if you hold fast
your confidence you can’t just believe
one time and make a one-time commitment
of your life to the Lord it needs to be
a ongoing commitment and that’s what
this is talking about you need to
continue and hold fast that confidence
in verse 15 it says while it is said
today if you will hear his voice Harden
not your hearts as in the provocation
again he’s already quoted these verses
out of Psalms chapter 95: 7 and 8 but
now he’s going back to that and he’s
highlighting that today you need to make
this decision and he’s talking to
Christians now this is a quotation from
Psalms chapter 95 and it’s actually
talking about the Jews when they came
out of the land of Egypt but the writer
of Hebrews is bringing it up to the the
current day this wasn’t something that
only applied to the Jews back thousands
of years ago it’s something for us today
and it goes on to say in the 16th verse
for some when they had heard did provoke
how be it not all that came out of Egypt
by Moses but with whom was he grieved 40
years was it not with them that had
sinned whose carcasses fell in the
wilderness so what he’s doing he’s again
talking about those Jews that came out
of the land of Egypt and they didn’t all
perish there was two people that
survived and that was Joshua and Caleb
because they operated in faith now
Joshua and Caleb were also Sinners the
Bible says in Romans 3:23 all of sin
come short of the glory of God so it’s
not the fact that you have to be perfect
but Joshua and Caleb in spite of the
fact that they had sinned they believed
God and they were willing to put their
life on the line and go in and take
those that land and fight against the
Giants it was faith that pleased God not
their performance now Faith is reflected
in our performance and so I’m not saying
that there is’s a total disconnect your
performance indicates what you really
believe in your heart the scripture says
as a man thinks in his heart so is he so
that there’s not a total disconnect but
God looks on the heart not just the
actions 1st Samuel chapter 16 says man
looks on the outward appearance but God
looks on the heart and so God is looking
past your actions your actions are an
indication of what’s in your heart but
God looks past your actions and sees
your heart and even though Joshua and
Caleb weren’t perfect their heart had
faith in it and that’s what pleases God
Hebrews chap 11:6 without faith it’s
impossible to please God and so they
didn’t perish because they had Faith but
all of the other people perished because
they didn’t believe God it was unbelief
that was really the problem and this is
the whole point that he’s making right
here that Jesus has provided a New
Covenant that’s what the first three
chapters of Hebrews all about showing
that Jesus is superior to Angels he’s
Superior to Moses he’s superior to the
Old Testament law but you have to
believe it in order for it to come to
pass the Israelites came out of Egypt
but they didn’t believe God and because
of it they died in the wilderness and
likewise there are multitudes of
Christians today today that are dying in
a spiritual Wilderness not receiving the
healing the Deliverance The Joy the
peace the happiness all of the benefits
of this New Covenant because they are
not in faith faith comes by hearing and
hearing by the word of God and with most
of us it’s not the fact that we’ve
rejected the truth most of us haven’t
heard the truth most Christians today
have not heard that we are delivered
from the old Covenant law that we have a
new covenant now they may use that
phrase New Covenant old Covenant but
they really try and mix them together
and many many many Christians today are
just simply missing out on all of the
benefits that Jesus has provided because
they are still thinking Old Testament
law and somebody’s watching this and
thinking no I’m not thinking Old
Testament law I don’t offer animal
sacrifices I don’t observe the feast
days I don’t observe all of these
rituals that the Jews go through I’m not
an Old Testament lead IST what it is
you’re headed in the same direction
you’re going down the same road you just
changed vehicles and now instead of
animal sacrifices and feast days and
things like this you got to go to church
you got to pay your tithe you got to
real of holy you got to do this this and
this it’s the exact same mentality just
a different set of rules but true
Christianity New Covenant Christianity
is not just the same old same as Old
Testament with new rules no it’s a
completely different way of relating to
God not based on your performance but
based on what others what Jesus did for
us man that’s awesome again verse 17 but
with whom was he grieved 40 years was it
not with them that had sinned whose
carcasses fell in the wilderness and to
whom swear he that they should not enter
into his rest but to them that believed
not again what he’s doing is emphasizing
it wasn’t just their actions their
actions were just a evidence a byproduct
of what they believed and then he says
in the next verse verse 19 so we see
that they could not enter in because of
unbelief now you could go back in
scripture to the Book of Exodus and you
could show that these people murmured
that they complained they said let’s go
back to Egypt let’s anoint a captain and
go back to Egypt and you could point to
physical things that they did and those
things were wrong but this scripture is
making it clear that it’s not their
actions that kept them out of the
promised land it was their unbelief and
that unbelief is what caused those
actions boy that’s a big statement right
there and this is what the New Testament
is all about it’s about your heart your
actions aren’t as important as your
heart if God ever gets your heart and
truly changes your heart and if you get
set free in your heart it will manifest
itself in your actions if you ever fall
in love with the Lord and your heart
then it will be reflected in your
actions and so this is the last verse of
the third chapter and then he’s going to
start into chapter four where he talks
about the Sabbath rest and this is one
of the most important things that I
think God has ever shown me this is
something that man I go back over all of
the time I live this constantly so I’m
out of time today but on our program
tomorrow we’re going to get into Hebrews
chapter 4 and start talking about a
Sabbath
