Ask and receive. Seek and find. Knock and it will be opened. (See Matthew 7:7.) In no uncertain terms does the Bible tell us to pray. to The Sermon on the Mount chapter 7 of
Matthew veres 7- 11 and the title of
this message answered prayer and this is
one in our series on prayer and today I
want to talk about how to get God to
answer your prayer Matthew 7: 7-1 some
verses that all of us ought to memorize
and recognize that it is one of God’s
many passages to encourage us to
pray for he says ask and it shall be
given you seek and you shall find knock
and it shall be open unto you for
everyone that askthe he that seeketh
findeth and to him that knocketh it
shall be open or what man is there of
you whom if his son ask bread will he
give him a stone or if he ask a fish
will he give give him a serpent if you
then being evil know how to give good
gifts to your
children how much more will the heavenly
father give good things to them that ask
him now I want us to look at this
passage for a couple of moments here and
before we get to the house of what is
necessary for God to answer our prayer
it’s essential that you and I see two
things and both of them are are segments
of three things each so I want you to
notice first of all of three things he
said says In this passage here first of
all he’s encouraging us to pray ask seek
and knock the second thing he gives us
here as a promise he says you ask you’ll
get you knock it’ll be opened you seek
it you’ll find it so here is a
tremendous word of encouragement to us
to pray now if God did not intend us to
pray he would not have said it if he did
not intend to answer it he would not
have given us so many admonitions and
encouragements to pray in the scripture
so let me divide um uh these three
things up if I might and this is just my
own Division and you can divide it your
own way when you think about asking and
seeking and knocking we ask for things
we seek to build relationships with him
with others we seek understanding wisdom
and knowledge and then we knock on the
doors of opportunity that may be before
us so he says we’re to ask we’re to seek
and to knock as if the Lord is saying in
every area of your life and every aspect
of your life the
way the way to find what you’re looking
for is by talking to the heavenly father
through the Lord Jesus Christ now here’s
something I want you to see in this
passage that is very very basic
absolutely essential to everything else
I’m going to say and it ought to settle
some people’s Hang-Ups about should you
ever ask God for
anything let’s look at that passage for
a moment he says with to ask and it’ll
be given seek will find knock and it
shall be open now the key to that
passage is to be found in the next two
verses when he says oh what man is there
of you if his son asking bread will he
give him a stone or if he ask him for a
fish will he give him a serpent let’s
put it in local terms today if your son
came in and said came in from school and
he said Dad I am really hungry and he
said i’ just love to have a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich and a big
glass of milk what would you say get
yourself a piece of wood and chew on it
you wouldn’t say that
or if he said dad what I’d really love
you to do is to take me down to our
favorite place and get us one of those
big long chili dogs and you said to him
go find yourself a scorpion and take you
a bite of that you will never say that
if your son or your daughter came in
said boy had a long ways to walk from
school I’m so hungry would you please
make me a sandwich mom well you’d get to
you’d get busy making a sandwich
because a mother a father who loves
their children is going to give their
children what they need need and what
they want if what they want is timed
right and is good for them and here’s
what he says if you and I being evil or
being Sinners know how and do give good
gifts to our children how much more will
our heavenly father give good things to
those of us who ask him now here’s what
he’s saying to us now watch this look
this way and I want you to zero in on
this the basis of all of God’s answered
prayer is not my Worth or my deserving
the basis of all of God’s answered
prayer is that God loves you and me that
is the basis of why ansers prayer you
see people say well I just don’t ever
feel worthy of God answering my prayer I
want to tell you that is the devil’s lie
I’ll tell you what you think about the
next time you ask God for something and
you come up with the idea well am I
worthy well does could could there be
any possibility of me being worthy of
God answering my prayer I’ll tell you
you can just do one thing and settle
that once and for all can anybody tell
me what it
is look at the cross and settle forever
you’re worth you want to know how much
you’re worth if you’d have been the only
person under God’s heaven left on this
Earth and it would have taken Jesus
Christ to go to the Cross he would have
gone for you that’s how worthy you are
in the eyes of God and one of the
biggest
Hang-Ups one of the biggest and most
successful snares Satan uses on us is to
say well who do you think you are just
say I’ll tell you who I am I’m a child
of the king and I’m so worthy in the
eyes of God he sent his only begotten
son to Die For Me on the cross and if he
died for me on the cross he’ll give me
what I need right here and there amen
the whole attitude is the approach we
take to our sense of selfworth he says
answered prayer now watch this God
answers prayer on the basis of his love
for you and me not on what we think
we’re worth not on whether we think we
deserve it or not not on whether we have
kept the following 49 rules or not
that’s not the issue the issue is that
God loves you and me and that he wants
to answer our prayers he wants to meet
our needs he wants to even give you what
you want now listen carefully there are
two schools of thought today one of them
is that the Christian is to live in
poverty suffer persecution and die in
poverty and sacrifice for God The Other
Extreme is this all you got to do is
just ask God and boy he just just
popping the blessings in just like this
think right think right think right if
you say it you’ll get anything in the
world you say both of those are extremes
and both of them are out of
balance here’s the balance God loves his
children God wants to meet all the needs
of his children children God wants to
give his children the desires of thy
heart he says Delight thyself in the
Lord and He Shall give you the desires
of your heart God does want to do that
but we must not get off balance on
either side so that what he’s saying In
this passage is look he says I want to
encourage you about something ask and
I’ll give it seek and I’ll see that you
find it knock and I’ll see that the door
is open because you being a child of God
if you love your children the heavenly
father loves you so much he wants you to
have what you’re seeking he wants you to
have what you’re knocking for he wants
you to have what you’re asking for as
long as the father knows it will not
ruin you but Build You Up it’ll not
become a blight in your life but build
you now I want to give you six
words because all of these things must
be true in your life if God is going to
answer your prayer and listen if you’re
going to pray and you don’t expect an
answer then why pray now some prayer and
praise is to thank him and to praise him
and to glory in him but even that he’s
receiving it but let’s take for example
the request that you and I make if it’s
for somebody else the necessary prayer
some need we have some desire of our
heart why pray if you don’t believe that
God’s going to answer your prayer in
fact the folks who are not praying are
not praying because they don’t really
believe that God’s going to answer their
prayer but he says asking it shall be
given you seeking you shall find
knocking it shall be open with those
things in mind the six
words all of them listen all of them are
right things so first of all you must
have a right relationship
and that relationship must be right with
him and it also must be right with those
around you if you recall a passage in uh
Psalm Psalm 66 Verse 18 there’s a verse
here that often times we quote and I
want you to listen very carefully we
quote this verse but we don’t really
understand what it means now I want to
distinguish between two things and I
want you to follow me carefully now
listen when he says in verse 18 if I
regard iniquity in my heart he will not
hear me let me tell you what that
doesn’t
mean that doesn’t mean that every time I
Stumble in the Christian Life God says
no more answers God understands where we
are in that Christian walk he
understands the difficulties we have he
understands what we know and what we
don’t know he understands our ignorance
and he understands our knowledge and
wisdom how much we’re applying how much
we’re not applying but when he says if I
regard it if I aim at evil if I if I
Center in on bullseye on what I want to
do in my life that I know is wrong God
says nothing doing no answers the
vertical relationship must be right so
what is he saying what’s the opposite of
that the opposite of that is my aim my
aim is to obey God if my aim is to obey
God that doesn’t mean I’m going to obey
him every time if my aim is to obey him
he’s going to answer my prayers if my
aim is to do evil he’s not going to
answer my prayers you see you have to be
careful to see to be sure that you’re
not saying oh God I’m aiming at you when
that’s not what we’re doing at all I
first of all my relationship must be
right in two different directions
vertically before God and what
horizontal among everyone else I can’t
go to God asking him answer my prayers
if my attitude toward other people is
wrong so first of all I must have a
right relationship there’s the second
thing that’s important here and that is
the right method how do I go to the Lord
in prayer asking for something and
here’s the key the key is to be definite
and specific definite and specific if
you recall for example in uh Philippians
4: 6 what he
says he says don’t be anxious about
anything but in everything by prayer and
supplication with Thanksgiving let your
request be made known to God now listen
he says be careful for nothing but in
everything every single thing look if
you will in Mark 11 and the people who
have difficulty when they say well I
don’t believe you ought to ask God for
things then you don’t have to cut Max
mark 11:24 out of your Bible and throw
it away and I’ll tell you why you can’t
do that because on the other side of
11:24 in my Bible is Mark 12:25 and I
don’t want to cut that one out you can’t
cut up your Bible without cutting out
something that you know ought to be in
there so you can’t do that so I want you
to notice what he says in Mark 11: 24
now
listen therefore I say unto you what
what’s that word what
what what thing
soever you desire When you pray believe
that you receive them and you shall have
them now let me tell you what that verse
says therefore I say unto you what
things soever you desire When you pray
believe that what the word means in the
Greek believe that you have already
received it and what you’re willing to
accept by faith will become yours in
reality that is what you’re able to
visualize by faith as yours God is going
to give it if you meet his requirements
the requirements are his requirements
you and I must meet first of all right
relationship secondly you and I must
have the right method now what is he
saying he’s saying don’t window to shop
when you pray God bless the missionaries
God bless the pastor God bless the
church God bless the nation what do you
mean by
that we are to pray specifically if you
walked into a restaurant and the and the
waitress came and she said May I’ll take
your order you said fine food and
drink and she handed you the menu she
said you must make a choice food and
drink food and drink is all I want she
says sir we have 100 items on the menu
and you have to tell me what you want
food and drinks all I want when you say
Lord just bless me and you say well now
God knows what I’m thinking but I want
to show you a horrible
fallacy sometimes when we say God just
blessed me we don’t have anything in
mind I mean
specifically you say yeah but God can
read my mind but if your mind’s blank
what’s he
reading now you think about it and I’m
not saying that to be funny it’s the
truth you just think about when you say
Lord bless me what are you saying he
wants us to be specifics because when
the blessing comes and we say here’s
what I asked for and look what God did
he gets the glory the praise and the
honor because you see it rains on the
just and the unjust and some things God
provides us we never ask for and that’s
therefore we ought to ask specifically
and definitely if we want God to answer
our prayer now somebody says well I
don’t think you ought to put God In The
Box I want to tell you friend he’s so
big you can’t box him up there’s no way
to put God In The Box let me just give
you one quick
illustration my daughter was uh she’d
reached 16 and she’d moved on to 18 and
she’d been loving and kind enough not to
ask me to buy an automobile at 16 which
I didn’t want to do and so finally when
the time came she said I’ve been praying
and I’ve been asking the Lord here’s
what I’ve been asking for so she had she
had the the the year the model the color
and everything all laid out so I said
well that’s fun and I found I was in a
box because I had been trying to teach
them to ask God for his best and also to
give their best so I would say to her
I’d say Beck what about us go looking at
Automobiles and I’d take her over to
some place and and she’d be very kind
and gracious and excited and she said
but you know that’s not what I think the
Lord wants me to have so I’d take it
somewhere else and sometimes the price
is a little bit lower over here and uh
uh and so so I had a little struggle
with that and I was struggling she
wasn’t seemed that God wasn’t so uh that
went on for a few months and one night
we were sitting at home talking and it’s
about 10:00 and we’ve been having a
little family power and so I said and
what about getting the paper and let’s
look in the paper so I want to encourage
Beck along a little bit and so we looked
at the paper and here’s exactly what at
least the model and uh the kind of car
so uh Andy calls this fell on the on the
phone and uh and he sounded encouraging
so they said why don’t we just go why
don’t we go see it right now so we got
in the car and went over there and soon
as we drove up there it was right make
right color every single thing and she
had detailed to the Lord exactly what
she wanted it was all there here’s what
we do and you see here’s what I’m trying
to tell you God wants to do more for us
than we want to do for ourselves you
know what we do we say oh I’m not worthy
of that God wouldn’t do this God
wouldn’t do that he wants us to be
definite he says listen what things
soever you need that’s not what he said
what things soever you what desire he
says Delight thyself also Lord and he’ll
give you the what the desires of your
heart God wants to bless his children
but the relationship must be right and
the way we go about it the method is we
should ask specifically and definitely
but what we are asking for now you can’t
always be that definite about some
things but you see somebody says I don’t
think you ought to pray for things let
me ask you uh moms how many of you have
a kitchen with no pots and
pants not anybody aren’t pots and pants
things they are what about a dishwasher
that’s a thing what about a a dryer for
your clothes that’s a thing you think
you do you need that sure you need that
well you may be able to wash it on the
scrub board if you wanted to do that but
I doubt if you’re going to do that what
I’m saying is this our whole life is
surrounded by things the things is not
the question it’s where my heart is what
I desire and my attitude what things
soever you desire When you pray believe
that God has already deposit them to
your account and you’ll receive them we
must get over the hangup of not asking
God for things the things is not the
issue it is my attitude first of all
right relationship secondly right method
and that is ask indefinitely third one
is right request right relationship
right method right request what is the
request 1 John chapter 5 this is the
confidence that we have in him that if
we ask anything according to his will he
hears us and if we know that he hears us
we know that we have the petition that
we desire desire of him so what is he
saying he says we must ask according to
his will now let me give you a very
brief lesson on how to find the father’s
will when you’re
pray first of all if you have a strong
desire for something don’t go tell God
now Lord I don’t really want this he
knows better than that just tell him
Lord I have a strong desire for this or
I think I want this but Lord I’m willing
for you have to watch this I’m willing
for you to bring my attitude and my
desires into neutrality so that even
though I want that I really want what
you want for me more than I want what I
want so you bring me to neutrality now
you may have to pray a little while you
can get to the point that you’re neutral
where you can honestly say Lord I do
still want it but I want your will more
than I want what I want it may be that
God will say fine you may have it or it
may be that you will find that your
attitude is drifting the other way and
you don’t somehow really want that and
finally what happens is you just lose
your desire or if you begin to pray pray
for something and you pray diligently
about it and it’s really not of God you
may have a check in your spirit and God
says that’s not of me and you’ll find
that immediately it’s not of God so you
quit praying or you’ll lose interest in
it if it’s not of the Lord or if it’s
not of God and you want it anyway and
you’re struggling here’s what you’ll
notice you’ll find it more and more
difficult to pray and you just have to
put on the Steam and just s of talk to
God and give him some verses as if
you’re trying to overcome God’s
reluctance and convince him that you
really know better than he does what’s
best for you your life if you will pray
and ask him to bring you to the point of
neutrality he will teach you very simply
when a thing is his will and when it’s
not his will the fourth thing that’s
important here and that is the right
formula what is the formula all of our
life we’ve been saying and tacking on
the end of our prayers in jesus’ name
amen well if you’ll notice for example
in uh John chapter 14 and that 14th and
15th verses in that chapter what he
saying he says begin beginning in verse
uh 14 he says if you shall ask anything
in my name I will do it verse 13 says
and whatsoever you shall ask in my name
that will I do that the father may be
glorified in the son now here’s the
mistake we make we find in the Bible a
verse of scripture it says well if I ask
anything in jesus’ name he’s going to do
it then we turn over to John chap 15 and
verse 8 it says if you abide in me and
my words abide in you ask whatever you
will and should be given to you so we
can pick out now watch this we’ll pick
out a verse here in says he says if I
ask anything in his name he’ll do it
Lord here’s what I’m asking in Jesus
name amen where is it what we don’t
realize is this there are at least six
things in your life that must be right
right
relationship right method of going about
it and then the right formula here the
right method the right request and the
right formula and when he says if we
shall ask anything in his name what does
that mean that is is not a magical tag
you and I put on the end of our prayers
because here’s what that means it means
Lord I’m asking
this because it is in character with
what Jesus would ask if Jesus were in my
circumstances it is in keeping with his
nature and his character as he lives his
life through my life you see all of us
who Believers are indwelt by him and
because we’re indwelt by him him he
desires to live his life through us so
we have mundane requests pots and pans
in the kitchen or clothes to wear or a
new set of tires for your automobile or
something in your business or or some
lady needs a new dress or or it’s it’s
books for your college whatever it may
be all of these are mundane but very
very logical requests and then there’s
some things that you just desire in life
that God really wants to do for you he
says to ask it in Jesus name so what you
have to ask is this before you tag that
on your prayer
is this in keeping with the character of
Jesus Christ by my having this now watch
don’t say oh God I don’t deserve this
that has nothing to do with it the
question is is it in keeping with the
character of Jesus Christ let me ask you
a question you think Jesus was an
unhappy man no do you think Jesus was a
man of poverty no you say well he said
you know the foxes have holes the birds
have Nest but the son of man has no
place to lay his head right you say well
why wasn’t he worried about that because
he could go to the Sea and say to a fish
and say Peter go catch yourself a fish
and in the fish’s mouth it’s a silver
coin you know why he was never worried
because he had absolute access to all
that the father owned wasn’t the
father’s plan for him to come down here
wealthy may not be God’s will for your
life to you for you to be physically or
materially wealthy but I’ll tell you
something friend if you are spiritually
wealthy you have the wealth the world
World cannot touch and that is the
wealth where our emphasis ought to be on
now when we come to him and ask we
should ask the question is this in
keeping with the character and the
nature of Jesus Christ who was a happy
man I’ll tell you why I know he was
happy the kids just loved him and you
can take any two people anywhere in the
world you put a fell Who’s grumping down
in the dumps and sad and sorrowful and
full of misery and everything else and
you put some fellow same kind of
Granddad you bring him in and he’s got a
happy countenance upon he’s got joy and
you put 25 kids or 100 kids and you
watch where they migrate they migrate to
happiness and joy that’s a kid’s
heart the kids love Jesus because Jesus
was a joyful happy man you say but he
was going to the Cross right but more
important than going to the Cross what
was he doing he was walking absolutely
and perfectly in the father’s will and
that’s the source of joy and peace and
happiness that’s why men in history have
died at the stake being burned to death
singing with joy in their hearts they’ve
been shot down with rifles they’ve been
put in prison they can die happily
because what it isn’t their
circumstances it’s their relationship
with Jesus
Christ we must see that the most
important thing in our life is our
relationship to him and if he’s living
within
me and I come to bring a request and I
to say now Lord would this be in keeping
with the Lord Jesus Christ who is living
within my life and if it’s in keeping
with his character and his nature
because you see listen the name listen
and this we ask father in jesus’ name
this we’re asking because it is in
keeping with his character this we’re
asking because it is in keeping with his
nature this we’re asking because we
believe he would ask this if he were in
our
position this we’re asking through him
to you
father right formula in the name of
Jesus Christ and there’s some
request that all of us have made that
we’re not in keeping
with the Lord Jesus Christ so we chalk
those off the next one is the right
attitude what is the right attitude well
turn if you will to James chapter 1 and
let me show you something if I might
James chapter 1 and if you will
recall he says if any man lack wisdom
let him ask of God who giveth to all men
liberally and abrath not it makes no
difference what he’s asking he says let
him ask of God he says but let him ask
in faith nothing wavering for he that
waivers is like the waves of the sea
driven by the winds and toss now watch
this here’s what it’s like you come into
the Lord and you say but now Lord I’m
not sure that’s what you want and then
you read in the scripture you say Lord I
know that’s what you want Lord I I you
know you say it but they say that’s not
true but Lord here’s what you said
here’s what my friends think here’s what
you said here’s what I feel but here’s
what you’ve promised driven by the waves
of the sea driven by The Winds of the
sea like waves
to and fro what is he saying to us he
says and if you’ll notice those next two
verses let not that man think that he
shall receive anything of the Lord you
know what he’s saying when you and I
make a request from God and we say oh
God I’m not too sure you’re going to do
that I’m not worthy but Lord here’s what
you said in your word God I’m not sure
this is what the pastor said this is
what my friend said uh this is what you
promised I don’t feel worthy you know
what that’s like he says a man who does
that is an unstable
man I want you to watch what he says he
says a double-minded man is unstable not
only in his prayer life but in all his
ways now friend that ought to say
something to us so what is the right
attitude the right attitude is Faith
listen back to Mark chapter 11: 24 what
things of you desire When you pray
believe visualize or faith is the
capacity to visualize what is not as if
it had already happened as if you
already already had it as if you already
experienced it as if you already
achieved it if you already accomplished
it he says what you and I are able to
believe beforehand by
visualization we will receive thereafter
but you see it’s all based on my faith
am I going to wave and go by what
somebody else says am I going to go by
What God Says am I going to go by my
feelings or am I going to go by the
witness of the word of
God my attitude must be right the right
attitude is the attitude of faith and
listen now watch this
what is the basis of Matthew chapter 7
we read that God loves us what is one of
the tremendous attributes of God God is
faithful what did God say God said I’ll
answer your prayer what’s that based on
God said he loved us is God faithful
he’s faithful if my relationship is
right and I’ve got the right attitude
and I’m making the right request and if
I’m using the right formula on down the
line if all of these you see what I’m
really saying is if my light if my life
and and my lifestyle is right God is
going to answer the petitions of my
heart what did we start off with we
started off here with a right
relationship you see if your
relationship with the father is right
your relationship with your brother’s
right why wouldn’t God want to give you
what you ask for you say yeah let’s go
back suppose I asked the wrong thing
he’s going to show you it’s the wrong
thing and let me ask you this so what if
he said you are totally off based 180°
out in left field well that’s no reason
to get upset you you don’t claim to be
omniscient you’re and not going to make
mistakes we’re going to ask the wrong
thing
sometime don’t get discouraged God
teaches us by
mistakes how to zero in on the right
thing so my attitude must be right and
my attitude must be one of Faith just
trusting
listen every single one of us ought to
have a whole list of reasons to trust
him for answered prayer you know what
that list is composed of answers he’s
given to us in the in the past and you
recorded those answers and recorded
those requests and God answered your
prayer and every time you look back at
one of those answered prayers you ought
to say thank you thank you thank you
here’s evidence that God’s faith will
answer my prayer one last thing that
must be right right relationship right
method right request right formula right
attitude and the last one is the right
motive and if you recall in this very
same book of the
Bible in Matthew Chapter 5 here what the
Lord says about um something that you
and I ought to be doing he says let your
light so shine before men that they may
see your good works and glorify God who
is in heaven our motive ought always be
to glorify the father you say well no
wait a minute let’s go back to the pots
and bands because if a woman can pray
for pots and pans that glorifies God
brother that takes care of a whole lot
of other things woman says how can I
glorify God by praying for pots and
pans you see the issue is this if you
prayed and God answered you have the
privilege of saying and all all six of
these things tie into each other just
just like just like knitting it all
together it all ties together if I make
a definite request because I have a
definite need or a definite desire and
God answers my definite request I have
the privilege of saying here is what I
ask for here is what God did and
somebody can’t say oh that’s just an
accident here is the second thing I
asked for the third the fourth the fifth
the 10 God is glorified you know how
he’s
glorified by his gifts of goodness and
grace and mercy to us which he gives us
whereby we can say to others let me tell
you what God has done in my life as an
answer to my prayer so if you want your
prayers answered you start off standing
on the right relationship and these
other five things must fall in their
proper place if your prayers aren’t
being answered if you’ll check out those
six things you’re going to find the
reason for unanswered prayer listen it
is the plan and the desire and the will
and the privilege and the joy of the
heart of God to answer your prayers and
it’s my prayer today that he’ll do just
that for you thank you Father for loving
us thank you for being so gracious and
kind and good to answer the prayers of
your
children
I pray for someone here today who is
unsaved that you’d speak to his or her
heart and help them to understand not
any of this applies to them until first
they pray the prayer of forgiveness
asking the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive
them of their sins trusting the Lord
Jesus Christ as their Savior for they
cannot pray Our Father who art in heaven
when they are not your children because
they’ve disobeyed you and refused to
accept Jesus Christ by whom we are
adopted into the kingdom and become the
Sons and Daughters of
God help that lost person to see today
Father the only prayer they can pray now
is the prayer of repentance and
forgiveness once they pray that prayer
they become a child of yours and once
they become a
child every promise in this book becomes
available as your will provides then
father I pray for those those today
who have really been struggling in their
prayer life and somehow in this very few
moments you have identified to them the
real basic
problem would you speak to their heart
and give them the courage and the wisdom
to correct that
immediately that they may begin to pray
with power and fruitfulness and
productivity and see the results that
you may be glorified as they are blessed
and this I Pray in Jesus name
