possible for us to connect people to the

message of jesus impacting lives here at

home as well as around the world

i want you to

give me your mind for the next few

moments and preach a short message today

but

i want to talk to you about something

some material that came into my hands

and this came from

a friend of mine marcus miekel he used

to be youth pastor here he now pastors a

great church in kentucky he has a family

in his church that are jewish jewish

people they were were raised orthodox

jews this man was and and he has since

become born again

but uh practiced all of the traditions

of the jewish faith for decades

and

he shared this with marcus marcus shared

some of what i’m going to share today

with you

and i thought it was so significant

and it has to do with moms

the sabbath we teach traditionally in

church was created for worship

but

technically

that is not the only reason the sabbath

was created for nor is it traditionally

the way the hebrews and jews

used it for primarily for worship even

to this day

uh god created every day to be worshiped

i think we mix we we mess up when we

teach people that we do worship on

sunday and then we do our secular life

through every day is to be a day of

worship every day is to be a day of

fellowship with him

so so what makes the sabbath holy the

word sabbath means in in in the hebrew

language to be holy and to to be holy

means to be set apart listen to be

consecrated for a specific purpose

so so it’s not it is about worshiping

god but it’s not about that only as a

matter of fact there’s a bigger

principle

and it has to do with family

god designed the sabbath specifically

and this is so interesting and i assure

you you can check this out and find out

it’s true in the hebrew faith that has

been passed down certainly jesus would

have been raised in a home where mary

and joseph would have

done everything i’m going to give you in

the next few minutes

right before his eyes week after week

after week 52 times a year

on the sabbath

the original way that god designed the

sabbath was a mother’s day present

it’s a perfect day for moms i’m going to

tell you why number one here’s how the

jews celebrate their religion and their

faith they pray to the god of abraham

isaac and jacob we’ll let the

theologians figure out the rest but

all i can tell you is they pray to the

to our god

and here’s the point

they start it by lighting a candle on

the table before they eat a meal

usually the mom will like the candle and

the husband will come in front of the

children behind the mom and put his arms

around the mother

he is to hug her he is to hold her

and the lighting of the candle

for dinner with the family the candle

welcomes the presence of god into the

home that’s what the candle represents

it is a special way of acknowledging we

this week are acknowledging god in our

home and they like the candle meaning

you’re welcome here god the man holds

his wife tightly he touches and he hugs

her certainly jesus would have saw mary

and joseph do this every week

and it reminds us when we invite jesus

into our homes

that we are pushing away strife as the

husband holds the wife what he’s saying

is we’re having a sabbath we may have

been arguing up to this point we may

have had issues and strife and trouble

but i’m i love the mental the picture of

the husband touching and and uh holding

his wife and

they’re saying whatever was going on

and and how powerful would that be to

know that no matter what’s happened in

your family there’s a day coming that we

have a sabbath we have a rest from our

arguments the kids might have been ugly

to one another and fighting because

somebody wore somebody’s heels and

somebody took their jeans and you and

it has to stop on the sabbath as he

stands there and he holds his wife

and they’re saying you know

basically whatever threatens to tear us

apart we light the light and say god

you’re welcome in this place and we

honor mom

he’s holding mom

the interesting thing is it reminds us

that god is for our marriage

i want to say to everybody marriage is

not easy

even you who are who are gooey and ooey

in love because you’ve been dating for

two weeks and you’re decided you’re

going to get married

marriage is not easy but marriage is

holy and marriage is god’s plan for the

family between a husband and a wife

the sabbath is rest from problems it was

rest from hurts as he held her in front

of the family it was rest from offenses

it was rest to

to misunderstandings and arguments no

matter how the husband and wife had been

arguing they were to hold each other in

light and invite the presence of god as

they like that candle to shine and the

children see the dad touching the mom

being affectionate and warming affirming

to the mom what else is beautiful is

it’s customary i’m not making this up

every week they do this in the jewish

faith it’s customary on the sabbath not

only

for her delighted and the husband to

hold

saying we’re giving a sabbath to any

strife that’s been going on in our home

secondly it’s customary to buy the wife

a gift for the sabbath

now it didn’t have to be an expensive it

could be a flower it could be a

candy it could be a small piece of

jewelry but every week they’re honoring

mom they’re praising mom they’re giving

mom a gift you work so hard for us you

do so much for us and we’re gonna hold

you and we’re gonna and the next part is

the best part it’s pretty amazing they

like the candle the present is given and

then the man sings a song

i’m not making this up to the mother

in front of the children and invites the

children to join in and sing the song of

appreciation and praise to the mom how

many of you moms are ready to convert

over to judaism forget this

i mean

good god

it’s pretty incredible the light

welcomes the presence of god a present

is given to the mother who works so hard

all week long acknowledging an

act of appreciation the man sings a song

you are so beautiful

at the table to me you everything i hope

for children join in you’re everything

mom we need

you are so beautiful

to me

reminding her of the blessing that she

is i love that

now here’s the huge part and this is

true

then comes the long meal and it is a

long meal

and the woman is not allowed to prepare

it

the man either has to hire someone to

prepare it or prepare it himself or the

family members do it it’s her sabbath

and she is not to do anything that day

everyone stays till the end nobody can

run my friends are waiting on me sit

down we’re eating and this is important

how many times the bible talk about

breaking bread and eating together how

powerful is that when a family sits down

and then the next part of the ceremony

is the father speaks blessing over the

children and over the wife in biblical

culture

intimacy is part of the sabbath between

the husband and the wife at the end of

the it starts at night the meal starts

at night and it goes to the next night

and after the meal there’s intimacy

between the husband and the wife because

it’s important part of the relationship

i get no amens i get

all you women were laughing and happy

and i get nothing

crickets did you hear them

you don’t have to it’s not the motive

behind it but again it comes back to the

to the oneness do you see the importance

of the oneness of marriage the oneness

of family of giving a sabbath to our

arguments and our strife and i’m mad at

you and i don’t want to keep your hands

off of me i can’t stand you you have to

get what would that mean to our families

if we knew it doesn’t matter how bad we

fought all week doesn’t matter what’s

going on we’ve got to sit down at a

table light a candle invite the presence

of god hold one another and speak well

to one another

how beautiful how healing how bad and

nobody can leave the table and run off

with their friends

we all going to sit here together with

our family with the with the presence of

god acknowledged saying heal our family

make us one even physically between the

children oh my god

but you know what what they’re really

saying is praise god

mom and dad still love one another

it starts on friday night for the jews

that’s that’s their sabbath when the sun

goes down

the next morning after they eat the meal

and do everything i said they get up and

they go to synagogue as a family they

hear the word taught

and that afternoon i thought this was

significant last last thing that

afternoon they do something outside if

they can if weather permitting they do

something outside with a family they

with their family they go on a walk or

they

do something they plan something go on

the lake they do something together as a

family and if the children are small

they make sure they carry the children

on their legs teaching them deuteronomy

chapter one where it talks about when

they came out of egyptian bondage the

parents carried the children on their

shoulders as they walked through the

standing water of the red sea

and they remind and rehearse those story

stories to their children while they

carry them out in a beautiful park

don’t you see how beautiful god made

family and how we have just torn it and

decimated it and destroyed it with our

busyness

the lasting thing

the way the sabbath ends is when the sun

goes down

on saturday the sabbath is over for the

jewish people and they have to go out

and look up into the sky and find three

stars

the three stars are visible only when it

gets dark because stars can can’t be

seen unless it’s dark

when it’s dark the family

and

the marriage

and the children start looking and when

they can count three stars

the day of sabbath is over

and this is not what they teach but i

want to take that in and and say to me

and to you and i as christians the star

represents

that we remind ourselves that the darker

it gets for our family

sometimes you don’t see the stars even

though they’re there sometimes you don’t

see god until it gets dark and you have

three stars god our father you have

jesus our redeemer and you have the holy

spirit the comforter and the darker it

gets for your family

the darker the days get for your home

and your children and your marriage and

your family the more those those stars

want to shine the father wants to hold

you and the son wants to redeem you and

the holy spirit wants to comfort you

that’s why the bible said in proverbs 22

and verse 6 train up a child in the way

that he should go and when he’s old he

will not depart from it deuteronomy 6

said teach them diligently to your

children when they lie down and when

they rise up the hebrew word teach means

to make bite marks or impressions upon

it’s it’s a it’s a word picture of

abiding

and leaving bite marks that we are to

teach the word of god to our families

and to our children that we leave those

marks on them and no matter even if they

fish from the polluted streams of sin

and even if they go to a wilderness of

rebellion for a season when they’re old

they’ll always come back to the bite

marks or the impressions that you put on

them when they were children as you

taught them

about a jesus a father and a holy spirit

you know i i just i just think that it’s

so beautiful because now i want to flip

it and i want you to see jesus in the

celebration

because that’s exactly what he does for

us he says in revelation 3 behold i

stand at the door of your home and i

knock and if you’ll let me come in i’ll

dine and eat with you and i want to tell

you something about the meal he’ll he’ll

turn the light on and you’re he’ll he is

the light of the world he’ll light the

candle and i’ll tell you you the bride

we’re the bride and he’s the groom and

you don’t uh you don’t do anything it’s

your sabbath you don’t work for this he

provides the meal when he hung on the

cross he said it’s on me i have finished

it it’s done my flesh is my is my bread

that i give you in the blood is the wine

that you drink and take and eat and you

receive of me i provide the meal i

provide the light i put my arms around

you and i hold you and i reconnect you

and i tell you to let the past go and

let the guilt go and let the shame go

and let the regret go and let the anger

go and let the revenge go and let the

offense and the bitterness go i hold you

and i sing songs over you you know he

said in zephaniah i sing songs over you

that’s what our heavenly father jesus

does for us and he calls to remembrance

and he speaks his words a blessing over

us and over our family and he causes us

to remember in the darkest hour that we

can count on the three stars god our

father i don’t care how dark your family

life may be going through you have jesus

the redeemer the second star in the holy

spirit the third star

i’m saying to you today

that the whole theme of the sabbath

in the times that jesus came up in

was centered around honoring the mother

to show appreciation for moms

to give honor your father and your

mother is biblical you see appreciation

is the fuel for life

we hear a lot and women feel uh inferior

because they don’t measure up to the

proverbs 31 woman you know everybody has

been around church a little while you

know there’s the proverbs 31 superwoman

you know what i’m talking i mean she’s a

she’s a she’s a ceo and a worldwide

corporation read it she has a clothing

factory the bible said she sells her

garments and pays for everything she’s

got employees it talks about all of that

then she’s a super mom she makes their

clothes with a sewing knitting them

together she fixes their meals it talks

about all the things so she’s a

superwoman in the office and in the

corporate world she’s a super mom and we

and women compare themself and say i

could never become the proverbs 31 woman

but perhaps

the two biggest things we overlook in

that chapter

is the bible said and her children rise

up and call her blessed

and her husband praises her also

so if you want the proverbs 31 woman

we first need the proverbs 31 kids

who show appreciation and rise up and

thank her and bless her and we need the

proverbs 31 husband who does the same

who praises her continually

i want to say to the moms

quit putting yourself down or comparing

yourself

and let go of that super mom myth

you know that you are supposed to work a

full-time job and yet attend every kid’s

activity and by the way be a fabulous

gourmet cook and by the way be an

amazing housekeeper and of course always

be a perfect 10 hottie and never miss

church while you’re at it

that’s a super mom myth

we call those kinds of moms non-existent

because they do not exist

there are stay-at-home moms and they’re

working moms and let’s be clear if you

are a stay-at-home mom you are a working

mom

give me a break

the definition of mom is a noun

i love this line one mom said this

about how motherhood is a full-time job

if motherhood was going to be easy it

would have never started with something

called labor

i watched her

i didn’t sit in the in the delivery room

sipping coffee or smoking a cigarette i

watched her have five children now that

was traumatic for me but i i sat there

and i watched her i watched the whole

thing

it was terrifying

and i said to myself

if it were up to me to keep repopulating

the earth and i had to do that to do it

it would be the end of the human

population i would never have the guts

to get pregnant it would be over

i’m just telling you

i would not

i think sometimes working moms struggle

with great guilt i want to say this

clearly nowhere in the bible does it say

to be a good mom you have to stay home

with your children

and raise those children that’s awesome

if god’s blessed you to do that and with

income to do that but it’s also an act

of righteousness to go out and work and

provide for your family and uh i think a

lot of working women struggle with

tremendous guilt

um because they feel guilt when they

leave their babies to go to work and

then it hits them on double whammy

because especially single mothers

because then they feel guilt when they

come home to their babies because they

know they left some stuff at work that

they couldn’t get done and so the enemy

just eats them up with guilt and

condemnation in your bad mother

one woman said show me a woman who

doesn’t feel guilt and i’ll show you a

man

and that’s the truth men don’t care they

wouldn’t stress like you do about trying

to do everything we just say that baby

will be all right just throw him a pass

in

let him go

when it comes to moms the bible does not

subscribe to one size fits all you you

have giftings you are unique you have

callings on your life

and god will give you the grace to do

what he’s called you to do

all kinds of moms are in the bible

and in this room there are ceo women and

there are domestic

engineers

and they are equal and they are to be

honored the same

wilma rudolph was the fastest woman in

the world she won three gold medals in

the olympics

but what most people don’t know is she

had polio when she was born and dr said

she would never walk but her mother was

a believer and she said by faith you

will walk

and in an interview after she won the

three gold medals for being the fastest

woman in the world she said quote i

chose to believe my mom

so mom when you when you pack that lunch

and you put the little love note to your

precious little darling

in there

you matter

when you tell that child you can do

anything you’re brilliant you’re

beautiful you’re incredible you matter

your voice matters when you bring your

children to church when it would be so

much easier just to forget it they’re

toddlers what are they going to get out

of it and you’re not going to get

anything out of it either you’re so

ticked when you walk in

you’re mad god can’t but he will through

all of that he’s working a blessing on

your family and you matter when god

wants to do something great in the world

he doesn’t send an army he doesn’t send

an earthquake he sends a child and he

finds a mother that he can trust

when god needed a moses to deliver the

israelites he sent a jock a bed that was

moses mother’s name jock a beard she was

exceptional because she not only was the

mother of moses but moses had a brother

named aaron he became the high priest

the first high priest and she had a

daughter named miriam and she became the

first praise and worship leader to

introduce israel to worship

the worship leader the high priest and

the deliverer came from one woman named

jochebed when when god needed an abraham

lincoln to break the chains of slavery

he found a poor illiterate uh virginia

farm girl by the name of nancy hanks

and told her to be a mother when god

needed martin luther king jr he reached

down and found the daughter of a poor

black preacher named alberta williams

when god needed a mother teresa he found

an impoverished woman a young girl in

albania and her name was nicole when she

gave birth to mother teresa who fed

millions around the world and when god

needed a savior

he reached down and found a jewish girl

and she gave birth to the son of god

i’m saying to you that god chooses women

just like you

god chose you to be the mother out of

tens of millions that he could have

chosen to be the mother to your child

god said there is nobody who will do a

better job you listen you put yourself

down you say i failed but god says you

there is nobody that could have done a

better job of loving that child than

that mother and i choose you

i choose

you

all over this room would you stand to

your feet

i want to say to you that if you lost

your mom

find peace and comfort there’s three

stars in your darkest

times

the star of the god the father jesus the

redeemer and the holy spirit are shining

on the darkness of your family let him

comfort you

let him help you

but i want every mother in this room

i want you to get out of your seat if

you will and i want you to feel this

altar as close as you can get because

i’m going to speak a blessing over you

this morning i’m old-fashioned i like

altar calls i can’t help it

i speak the blessing

of the lord upon these women these

mothers

we light the candle for your presence to

invade our homes

we don’t have to do it physically

because we’re under a new and better

covenant and everything in type we have

experienced through christ and he is the

light of our families

invade the darkness the depression the

discouragement the fear the worry the

guilt the condemnation the shame the put

downs the arguments the the fights the

the strife invade it with your light

holy spirit

put your arms around us and our families

and let us feel the strong embrace let

every mother feel the comforter as he

embraces them right now let the three

stars the father son and holy spirit

shine over us sing over our families

this week oh god sing over our children

and our grandchildren and i speak the

blessing now may the lord bless you and

keep you may the lord make his face

shine on you may the lord be gracious

unto you may the lord lift up his

countenance upon you and may he give you

peace

in your home

and in your family

and light like never before

in the darkest days

in jesus name everybody say jesus

i receive you as the light of the world

in my home

and in my family i surrender to you

i confess you as my savior

your blood on the cross the meal that

heals

that you provided on the cross

cleanses me

and my family

in jesus name

at kingdom connection we believe that

god has enormous potential for the

children and people of haiti and over

the years jensen franklin and partners

just like you have built homes provided

270 000 meals a month and created jobs

that are helping mothers and fathers

provide for their families but there is

still a food crisis in haiti many of the

orphanages depend almost solely on

donated food to feed the children that

are in their care and so many haitian

families find themselves unable to care

for their children’s basic needs but you

can help these families build a future

for their children when you do we want

to equip you to protect the future of

your own family by sending you jensen
