the one Church worship team is so
anointed they had me thinking I can see
it’s such an honor and a privilege to be
with you all again for those of you who
do not know my name is Sarah Jake’s I’m
from the great state of Texas but I have
found one church to be quite a home for
me I attend online quite frequently and
so when Petey allowed me to minister
today it’s not something that I took
lightly because I know the power of God
is so strong within this community and
that what happens here literally goes on
to affect the world and so I’m honored
to be before you I won’t be too long I’m
going to be speaking today out of the
Book of Ruth Ruth 118 through 20 I think
I told them 19 but it’s actually 18 and
in the text it says when she saw that
she was determined to go with her she
stopped speaking to her now the two of
them went until they came to Bethlehem
and it happened when they had come to
Bethlehem that all the city was excited
because of them and the women said is
this Naomi but she said to them do not
call me Naomi call me Mara for the
Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me
so Naomi returned in ruth the moabite us
her daughter in law with her who
returned from the country of Moab now
that came to Bethlehem at the beginning
of barley harvest my topic for today is
when winter becomes home god I need you
to be with me today my words alone are
not enough my thoughts alone cannot
reach your people but if you would
combine it with your anointing you could
fill this place like never before you
can break chains and strongholds and
freezes that have threatened to take
away our hoping so god I ask that you
press in with us so God be with the
strength
encourages and oh god let me be a vessel
may the words that proceed out of my
mouth touch her people and may they
leave her never the same I want to talk
to you all a little bit about Naomi and
Ruth for those of you are not familiar
with the story naomi was from Bethlehem
and 10 years before we are at this point
in the text she left Bethlehem to go to
Moab there was a famine in Bethlehem and
so her husband said to her you know come
on let’s go to Moab I believe that
there’s hope for us there and if we
could pack up our bags and leave
everything we’ve known we could start a
new life in this land and so she goes
with him to Moab and they have two sons
and they take their two sons to Moab and
not shortly after they arrived in Moab
her husband passes away what do you do
when God sends you somewhere in trouble
is waiting on you when you heard the
words and you ordered your steps but you
get there and things aren’t going
exactly the way they should go you have
a promise you have a planning you have
hope and so we’ve seen they owe me with
this hope in Moab but now our husband is
gone so she transfer her hopes to that
of her two sons and so she pours all
that she has left into her two sons who
find the wives and she becomes a part of
their family and 10 years after her
husband passes her sons passed – what do
you do when your hope has nowhere to go
when it’s hard to believe because
everything you believed in in some way
or another has let you down when you put
all of your faith into God and you said
God I’m escaping one a famine but I’m
running into complications her husband
has passed away her sons had passed away
and now she has two daughter-in-laws who
were still committed to being with her
but she has nowhere to take them no hope
to offer them and they’re looking up to
her saying we’re going to go wherever
you go sometimes when your hope is lost
you try to push
away because it’s difficult to have
people who still believe you around you
when you’re feeling so much bitterness
joy is supposed to be contagious but
what happens when you don’t want joy
because you’re still dealing with so
much pain and so we have Orpah in a Ruth
who are Naomi’s daughter-in-laws and
Naomi sits them down and she says girls
listen my husband has passed away my
sons are gone I think you all need to go
back to my web I’m gonna go back to
Bethlehem and we’re going to separate
ways and they say no no we’re not going
to go we’re going to be with you we love
you and she says what are you going to
do I can’t have any more children if I
find another husband it’ll be years
before those sons grow up leave me alone
and orbit was like well you know how you
did you know someone’s trying to get you
to do something and you say yes because
the first time you say yes just kind of
like not really yes it’s kind of like
maybe but you say what you think you’re
supposed to say in this in this instance
and someone gives you one more chance to
say no and so Naomi says no please
really don’t be with me go and number
said we’ll listen i’ma holla at you
an orbit decides to go back to her
family you see the crazy thing about
destiny is just because you start with
someone doesn’t mean that you end up
with them and so opera Orpah separates
at Naomi’s insistence and if you aren’t
careful sometimes you will push people
away and then be mad that they left
because you’re so desire to be abandoned
because you feel so alone that you push
away anything that looks like love and
anything that looks like healing and
anything that looks like commitment
because you’ve been broken over and over
and over again and so or believes but
Ruth stays and there’s a part in the
scripture where she tells Naomi wherever
you go I will go your people will be my
people your God will be my god but naomi
was in winter and Naomi didn’t
understand at the time what was going to
be waiting for her in Bethlehem but she
knew that Ruth was going to be with her
sometimes you have to stay loyal to
people who don’t want you to be loyal to
them sometimes your loyalty can inspire
them but you have to understand that
that is going to be quite a journey and
that loyalty doesn’t always have
benefits that you reap the next day
so Ruth and Naomi begin the journey from
Moab to Bethlehem and from Moab to
Bethlehem on foot took about seven to
ten days I imagine though the text does
not tell us that the journey must have
been a little bit awkward you’ve got one
woman who was saying call me Mara
because the God has dealt so bitterly
with me we can talk about the weather
how is the game what you want to eat
guru you get your nails done next week
and so they make this journey to
Bethlehem and the moment that they
arrive they are confronted with people
who knew who Naomi was ten years before
she had ever dealt with any pain she
goes back to her hometown when when she
left she was full of hope and she comes
back empty have you ever made a decision
that was supposed to fill you up but
instead it left you empty and you try to
put on a face for the people who knew
you before you left and try to pretend
like hey and you know I got it all
together and and I left and things
didn’t work out the way they were
supposed to but that’s alright because
God is still faithful Naomi didn’t even
want to pretend she said listen don’t
call me Naomi Naomi is gone naomi was
full of hope naomi was still believing
in herself but mara mara knows the truth
about her life mara knows that sometimes
winter comes and stays and changes who
you are
so Oprah has gone in Ruth may have
thought at some point on the journey
that Orpah was able to escape winter
because she didn’t have to deal with the
bitterness that naomi was facing but the
reality is that no one face no one
escapes winter that even when someone
leaves you it doesn’t mean that they got
away that even though someone decided to
separate themselves
it doesn’t mean that they avoid trouble
altogether they just get trouble with
their name on it and sometimes the enemy
will trick us into believing and
creating these lives for all of the
people who left us making us believe
that they went on and they were happy
and successful and we were still here
bitter facing disappointment and
bitterness while they go went on to
build a life without you and then that
adds to the bitterness you see some pain
is meant to break you from going back to
who you used to be sometimes you have to
be broken over and over and over again
so that you can never go back and so
though Ruth was hurting and donate only
was bitter they couldn’t go back to Moab
because there was too much pain there
have you ever gone through something
where you couldn’t go back to who you
used to be and the road ahead may be
uncertain and it may be as scary and
there may be people who could challenge
you but you know that going ahead was
much better than staying back where you
once were so when she’s amongst these
people in Bethlehem you know they’re in
the middle of a celebration they finally
had a harvest when she left they were in
famine she’s come back they have harvest
but now her soul is the one in famine
and so everyone is exciting and Hey Girl
how you doing you pissed on one you look
good girls look at you and she says she
is allowed bitterness to become her
truth and when you allow bitterness to
become your truth it changes your name
it changes how the people who once
believed in you now begin to view you
because you would put them in a
situation where you say there’s no
reason to have any hope for me anymore
everything is springing around you but
it feels like something is dying inside
of you and sometimes you can’t pretend
you’re not her
anymore and so we’ve seen Naomi no
longer able to pretend that she was
without paying because devastation has
said in all around her but we don’t hear
much from Ruth because Ruth is just
there sometimes when people are going
through all you can do is just be there
you can’t inspire them to change all you
can do is remind them that they aren’t
alone you know I remember there was this
time my mother and I took a trip to
Chicago and we were in Dallas it was
February and there was like 30 degrees
in Dallas with 30 degrees in Dallas and
30 degrees in February in Chicago is a
little bit different so I call myself
being ahead of the game and I looked up
the weather and it’s 30 degrees and I
got get like a little light jacket
because in Dallas that’s what she needs
a little light jacket so I got a little
light Jack and I got off the plane and
it was the Windy City so it was like a
lot of cold just all up in my face but I
had this little light jacket and my
mother told me before I got on the plane
you might want to get a fur I was like
girl I’m not gonna be walking around
Chicago with the fur on that is not
necessary but but I had too much pride
to pretend that I was cold so I was just
out there taking it all on the Michigan
man from store to store just taking it
then I felt like I was getting a fever
and I was sweating but it was cold and I
was like I don’t really know what I
think I’ve got an infection at this
point
and my mother was just looking at me
like you call it I was like this is a
little cold but I’m trying just need a
scarf and so she finally about an hour
after being outside comes outside with
this big North Face jacket and boots in
a bag and she had me looking at it all
day not two hours later I still looking
over in the bag and the jacket was in
there and I was like I’m good I’m good I
don’t need it and so I finally had to
admit that I was freezing and probably
in need to visit an emergency room and
so my mother gives me the coat and I put
it on off a stand and it just reminded
me at this point when Naomi introduces
herself as Mara because sometimes God
can’t send any warmth your way until
you’re willing to admit that you’re
freezing that everyone has a season and
everyone has a struggle and sometimes
it’s okay to say I’m not okay
and we get so caught up and trying to
pretend that we don’t feel the very
chills of life that we miss an
opportunity to have an intimate
encounter with God you see because he
can’t get through our masks he can’t get
through our facade he’s too real for
that so as long as you’re intent on
pretending he can’t help you
but the moment you’re willing to say I’m
feeling a little bitterness I’m filling
winter has become home and I don’t want
to live here anymore you see because
when they owe me arrived they were in
barley harvest and so all she saw was
the harvest she didn’t realize that they
started planting in autumn and that it
wasn’t until spring until it began to
flower which means that there was a time
in between autumn and spring where even
the harvest had to go through winter and
too often we get caught up looking at
people’s harvest that we don’t see the
winter they had to go through before
they got there
there’s a process called vernalization
and that is an agriculture where they
expose the plant to chilling
temperatures to initiate or accelerate
the flowering process that means that
sometimes God will expose you to winter
to accelerate your harvest but if you
aren’t careful you will get so caught up
in filling the chill of winter that you
have no way to see that your roots are
going to be stronger after this that
once you’ve been planted and you’ve been
exposed to the chilling temperatures
that you’ve proven that you can survive
that you don’t have to allow bitterness
to become your name because if you just
would hold on to the hope even if you
have to use someone else’s hope have you
ever had to borrow someone’s hope have
you ever had to loan someone your hope
and so we see roots silent but president
offering hope to a bitter Naomi winter
was never meant to freeze your hope it
was meant to strengthen your roots if
you can find hope in someone else you
can find hope for yourself because if
God did it for you I think you could do
it for me
you see the incredible thing about
winters is because of the way the earth
is tilted some winters are harsher than
others but no one escapes winter and so
in La February and the Chicago February
may be a little bit different but I
can’t take away from the fact that
you’ve had a winter and I’ve had a
winter and I can’t get so caught up
comparing my winter to your winter that
I missed the part where our roots were
made stronger and more incredibly is
that when we see people in leadership or
we see people who are supposed to have
it all together facing a winter of their
own
oan we think that how how are they still
experiencing winter we trick ourselves
to believing that there is a level in
which you come into your walk with God
or and your walk with life where you no
longer are freezing where you no longer
need anyone to get you a jacket and take
care of you and bundle you up because
you’re supposed to have it all together
and instead of offering warmth we offer
criticism you cold over there how could
you be cold coldest for the rest of us
as if we all don’t have something to
face we alienate people instead of
providing warmth for them and then we
wonder why no one’s willing to ask for
help maybe just maybe if we were a
little bit more willing to share our own
fleece we could help cover someone else
see the problem is is that we think that
if we cover someone else that means we
are exposing ourselves and some of us
have so much going on that we couldn’t
dare risk exposing ourselves we drag the
point look at someone else who was
exposed girl did you hear Naomi is back
year girl I heard it she bit a girl girl
that’s how my mother and I thought we
said girl all the time girl she bitter
girl well you heard her husband died
yeah I knew her husband you know her
sons die yeah I know a buncha shion’s
call herself bitter sometimes we try to
minimize someone’s pain and tell them
how they’re supposed to process it that
shouldn’t hurt you even though it would
hurt me because the reality is until you
face your own winter or been in my
winter you can’t really tell me how to
cover up because what you face in there
laying with someone else faces in
Chicago people in Chicago would love to
come to LA for winter but people in
Antarctica would love to go to Chicago
see the reality is that we all have
these seasons our lives come in seasons
and cycles and if we aren’t careful
we’ll be so insistent on looking for a
harvest that we forget that we have to
go through winter and so when winter
comes it shocks us to our core how could
this happen to me see because we think
that just because we have a seed that we
should have the harvest the very next
day but everything has a process and if
you’re going to survive and make it to a
harvest you have to fall in love with
the process that means you have to find
something to love about winter you can’t
fall so in love with winter though that
you make it home you have to be willing
to even let go of winter to let go of
summer to let go of spring to let go of
autumn you can’t be so insistent on
having things your way and having things
work out the way you want them to work
out that you miss the beauty of seasons
and the grace of having cycles
everything has a cycle the earth is
spinning right now winter is coming
right now Sun is out it was hot
yesterday I mean very hot yesterday I
mean I had to tie my hair down yesterday
it’s a long story but it all separates
but if you you will learn to love me I
promise I keep it real but the reality
is that even in the middle of summer
winter is on the way and so you have to
fall in love with the moment it’s so
much so that when winter comes you
remember that what summer was like and
you remember because there was a summer
that summer will come again and if I may
challenge you as sheep to the one church
family to really take a moment and all
the children may be going through with
your own winters your own autumn summers
and Springs to really recognize the
seasons of your church the spirit that
exists within this community because the
very shepherd who has been so diligent
and seeing us through our own cycles
needs our fleece and as we come upon
pasture appreciation I cannot think of
any better time to offer him our fleece
in his own winter
it is biblical that when a shepherd was
tending to his own flock that there were
timers in winter where he had to use
their fleets to keep him warm
using my parents have been in ministry
for over 35 years and they’ve seen a lot
of winters quite a few summers a few
Springs and even more autumns and I can
remember when my father’s mother passed
away that he planned the service and had
it within the sanctuary and invited the
congregation to come and when he invited
the congregation to come no one showed
up and you know we have that our church
is relatively big there’s about 35,000
members so for no one to come now let me
tell you why this is so important
because when you are a shepherd you give
your life for your sheep it’s bigger
than just the Sundays that we see in the
few hours that we come and get our fuel
and go back into the world when is the
last time you said a prayer for your
Shepherd to really cover him to really
take a moment to understand that in
order for him to lift all of our spirits
he’s got to have a strong spirit himself
and I know not all of us are shepherds
but some of you all know what it’s like
to have to lift one of your friends up
to find your friends or your family in a
place where they’re in need of a touch
from God a reminder that they are not
alone and you know how much it’s you
know sometimes you get out to fumble a
hooker and I just drained me because you
had to pour so much into a person to get
them to just believe again that you have
to get off and y’all don’t go to the bar
but y’all might had to go for a run
afterwards his hoof that thing will wear
you out if that is what dealing with one
person will do imagine having the weight
of all of these souls while your own
soul is still tender and though I am
preparing to close then I want to really
challenge you all especially as I said
we’re going into pastor appreciation to
maybe commit to the next seven days of
taking ten minutes to pray for Petey
I know that we’ve you know we’re getting
ready for the appreciation and we want
to bless him in as many ways as possible
and for some of you finances may not be
an option but short time is an
investment if you would go to God and
prayer at this time not just for him but
but shepherds like him for the people in
your life who you know are carrying
people that God would really strengthen
them and encourage them so that winter
does not become home for them so that
they are constantly reminded that they
are not alone because the day will come
when winter knows your name
and when you walk into these doors and
you sit into these pews and worship
begins and you feel that hope coming and
Petey gets up and does his word and says
hey and come on somebody and you
and you come in empty but leave full
it’s because he was in his presence for
you you see sometimes we have the luxury
of not going before his throne because
we know that we can come in Sunday and
someone went for us I want to challenge
you to return the favor
for your worship team who pour their
hearts out
for the incredible leaders in our prayer
team and 5000 fathers and beyond beauty
and power and purity because for many
people this is the only sense of home
that they have and as family we pray for
each other we stay connected to one
another we don’t have time to point
blame and say well you shouldn’t need no
coat over there I’m not going to give
you no coach you brought winter on
yourself because at the end of the day
winter is winter and if you can show a
little bit of compassion in the middle
of someone’s storm God is going to
multiply that compassion when it’s your
time to go through
I want to have an altar call for people
who have found themselves maybe envious
of someone else’s harvest that you see
so many people celebrating that harvest
is here but you’re you feel empty on the
inside you have your own winter
happening in your soul or you’re losing
yourself to bitterness trying to fight
it trying to put on a mask and cover up
the pain you feel but the bitterness is
eating you away and you can tell that
it’s threatening to change your name we
won’t let you change your name we won’t
let you give up on yourself
and lastly if you found yourself judging
someone else’s fries found yourself
judging someone who was shivering when
you could have offered them fleece I
want to challenge you to extend an
apology not just to them but to God
because each person in winter is an
opportunity for us to show what God is
so graciously done for us which is
pulled us out of our own scores our own
winters and given us incredible hope
please join me down here I want to SPT
if he’ll pray with us encourages and
strengthen us Amen why don’t we all
stand
wow what a word thank you so much so
so if you hear the Lord was speaking to
you the Holy Spirit was speaking to you
and you were getting ready to freeze
over the goddess purposing to fall you
out for the race of the eye set but you
just come and meet us here at the altar
if you’re here and you don’t know the
Lord you don’t know the Lord and you
want to know him for yourself I just
kept hearing even through worship today
I just kept hearing how faithful got the
the the revelation and the communication
of his faithfulness him saying I will be
faithful to you in every season of your
life I kept hearing that and he’s saying
that to everyone to every human being on
the face of the planet
we are his desire in his delight and if
you’re here and you don’t know my
promise you don’t want to do life
without him because those seasons will
come even those winters will come and
you’re gonna want to know him in the
winter it’s easy to know him in the
summer but the winter is when you need
him the most and you can cultivate a
relationship with him so much so that it
will not even make sense
and how God gives you peace that passes
all understanding in your winter season
and so if you’re here and you don’t have
a relationship with him and it’s real
I’m not trying to pitch religion you
know it’s not my deal but I’m telling
you you can have a connection with the
king of kings and the Lord of lords you
can know him for yourself and he will
speak to you and he will give you wisdom
and insight and direction and strength
when you are out of options when you
have no more wisdom when you are at your
perplex you are at your wits in there is
you need a revelation there is none out
of nowhere
a word will come to you from him that
will lift you and move you forward and
so if that’s you and you’re here and you
don’t have that connection and you need
that connection you feel by yourself
sometimes you don’t want to do life by
yourself he will be in you leading you
in guiding you like he told the woman at
the well he said you keep coming to this
well and you’re drinking but you got to
keep coming back over and over and over
again Jesus said I will be a well on the
inside of you and there may be some
people here right now and you ping
you’ve been having to continue to go
through a natural well and then you dry
up and you got to go back to that same
natural well when you note that well is
not the best for you but you feel like
it’s the best you’ve got
and I’m saying today that the Lord is
saying you come to me one time and
you’ll never thirst again you come to me
one time and I’ll be a well on the
inside of you that springs up into
everlasting life whatever you need to be
refreshed I’ll pump my will and you’ll
be refreshed if that’s you and you don’t
have a relationship I don’t know how you
got her someone invited you but these
words are hitting you right in the chest
the message hits you in the chest the
altar call hits you in the chest and now
these words are hitting you in the chest
I want you to plug in if that’s you I
just want you to come meet us we’re
gonna pray don’t worry about who’s
looking these words have just touched
your heart and you know that that Lord
is talking to you he’s calling you to
more you’re thirsty you’re thirty said
you keep going back to that to that
natural well and you need the spiritual
oil that never runs dry that you just
come you just come why I’m talking come
on praying the world that never runs
Drive that you I just want you to come
right now
you don’t have a relationship with the
Lord but you want more or you drive
maybe you got a well but because of
things have happened into your life that
Wales got clogged up and you don’t feel
his presence to what you used to there’s
a worship that you can give God that
will open that well up you have a well
but if you’re honest you don’t feel them
anymore you drown you’re trying to get
back and try to figure out how to get
back and there were some things that we
even said today they’re like yep that’s
me yep that’s me but I I can’t figure
out how to get back
I believe there’s grace in this house
right now I’ll be there’s grace that’s
interesting because there’s another word
in the Hebrew and literally the word
grace careese means divine intervention
upon the heart study it divine
intervention upon the heart sometimes
you can’t manage your heart stuff just
happens and your heart gets hard stuff
just happens and your heart gets broken
it’s one of those things where sometimes
you want God you want God you want to
want God but you don’t want God
anybody ever been there you want to want
what you should want
but you don’t want it that’s because you
need a you need a grace you need a grace
upon your heart so that you can want
what he wants to give you so if you’re
here and your hearts gotten hard God
speaking to you I want you to come and
meet me here at the altar right now
right now I’m talking to you cool if I
ain’t talking to you stay where you are
we’ll pray and be done but the Holy
Spirit is talking to you then come and
receive what he asks for you will come
and receive what he has for you then
come and receive what he has for you
come on somebody that’s you come that’s
you come come on Sam I got a lot of
strength I can prophesy to everybody in
this room but I think enough has been
said if that’s you just come you need
more I dare you to step into it there’s
some things that were spoken here today
I’m done after this there are some
things that was spoken here today that
they didn’t they didn’t hit close to
home they hit home and they hit home
because there’s grace in this place that
has created an opportunity for you to be
free don’t let it pass by that hardness
will even say I ain’t going nowhere yes
I heard it so what I’m trying to do is
I’m trying to break through the ice of
your winter and get to your heart it
didn’t just you you’re trying to pretend
like it hit close to home no I did hit
close to home it hit home it hits you
right in your heart and you know it
and it hit you right in your heart for a
reason God reveals to heal that’s why he
does it and I just want you to come get
your life back get your joy back same
Naomi got her joy back she got her life
back I feel like this is a moment of
restoration as once you come it’s a
father we thank you so much for what
you’re doing in this place is such a
real god you’re such a real lover and
God your word says that you’re near the
brokenhearted you’re near those who have
a contrite spirit the father I thank you
that you’re in this place you’re in this
building you want to do a real work
you’re bypassing religious ideologies
and the traditions of men and you’re
getting right down to the heart of the
matter and the heart of the matter is we
need you in every season and in every
way and you are more than enough in God
we know the most profound testimony we
can give is is what David’s sang to us
in Psalm 27 when he said the one thing
that we desire is you I thank you for
these your sons and daughters who have
said yes to you those are in the
building those are watching via
livestream who’ve come and they’ve said
God you spoke to me
you’ve touched me and I need you and I
want more and I feel like I’m yeah I’ve
been in my winter too long and I’m
