I titled this teaching the Garden within

cultivating a generational Legacy of

Praise because that is what scripture

says that we are meant to do that is our

first and foremost Legacy is that we

will tell of his mighty works from

generation to generation to generation I

want to be able to tell what God did for

my grandmother and my great-grandmother

I want my children talking about what he

has done for me not just in pulling us

out of lack but in the great victories

in the advance ments in the EXP in the

expansion of our gifts in my

contribution to being a part of a church

that is

powerful not a

building the body of

Christ that is what our first and

foremost generational Legacy should be

and we should leave Financial legacies

and we should leave wisdom but the

praise is of

god generational Legacy here’s the

problem generational trauma is the the

enemy of generational

praise your generational trauma is

opposing the legacy of Praise that you

are meant to leave and so we must look

at how we break the bands and the legacy

of generational trauma so we’re going to

talk about that today theologically

psychologically and

biologically how do we break free of

generational what we’ve been calling

curses

so the first thing I want to do is free

you from the generational

curse if you have

Jesus on the inside of you no curse can

follow you that’s that because what God

has called blessed no one can call

cursed now I know there’s a verse in the

Old Testament in the book of Deuteronomy

it talks about in The Book of Exodus it

talks about it that the sins of the

father shall be visited on the children

for three Generations but that is why

Jesus came to break the curse of sin we

don’t have to have my grandmother’s sin

I’m not punished for that by God I’m not

even punished by God for the sin I

committed last

week because it says that the blood

covers and so when I Repent he cast it

into the sea of forgetfulness if he

doesn’t remember it how is he punishing

me for

it but we have been able to to kind of

hold on to that idea that theological

thinking that we’re being punished for

something someone else did or more often

for something that we did because it

gives us a sense of control to be able

to figure out why things are going wrong

because I would rather have an

explanation that hurts me then no

explanation at

all because when I don’t have an answer

I don’t like

ambiguity is it just me so we’ll come up

with an explanation just to have one but

the blood of Jesus breaks makes these

spiritual curses and so right now if you

feel like there’s something in your

family that’s been a spiritual curse and

you have Jesus on the inside of you then

you declare in the name of Jesus that

curse is broken you cannot attach

yourself to me you cannot attach

yourself to my home you cannot attach

yourself to my family or to my children

I am blood covered Blood Bought and

blood

empowered that’s it every generational

curse in the room

broke we can leave now y’all done we’re

good the problem is not the

curse it’s the

memory what you’re really battling are

the

memories because the memories pass and

when we have a memory of something it

defines the way that we understand

things it defines what we believe and

every thought that you think is based on

a

belief and from those thoughts fruit is

what what you do how you behave but also

what shows up in your body and so I want

to talk to you about what it means to be

a garden that leaves a legacy of fruit

that is good generation after generation

let’s go to Isaiah

5811 some of you might be familiar with

this

verse most of you will be familiar with

Isaiah 58:12 but maybe not 11 and the

Lord shall guide thee continually and

satisfy thy soul in drought

and make fat thy bones and thou shalt be

like a watered garden and like a spring

of water whose Waters fail not when we

talk about what it means to be well

through the lens of scripture God gives

us

Gardens and they that shall be of thee

shallal build the old waste places Thou

shalt raise up the foundations of many

generations and thou shalt be called the

repairer of the breach the restorer of

pths to dwell in why is that significant

because we know there have been some

generational problems

anybody in a family that’s got some

generational problems addiction

addiction addiction addiction divorce

divorce divorce divorce uh finan poverty

poverty poverty poverty diabetes

diabetes diabetes diabetes and so we

look at and we see things running in our

line and we declare they’re going to run

out with me but sometimes it seemed like

they ran out and then they skip a

generation and then they pop back up my

mother’s father struggled with addiction

my mother’s mother’s father was an

alcoholic there was no addiction in my

mom’s generation or my dad’s gener my

Mom and Dad we we was

Holiness there weren’t no alcohol ever

even in the

house no cigarette child we couldn’t

play cards I can’t play spades

today I got PTSD right now about Spades

cannot play with my friends because my

dad saw me learning a car game at the

babysitter one time picked me up gave me

the look he got these green eyes gave me

the look I could have sworn I heard the

belt move rattling I was like what just

happened we don’t play cards yes sir

child Uno is all you can get from me as

a result I am I need to go to trauma

therapy over the cards because I can’t

play no cards so there was nothing like

that in our home but yet addiction found

my sister’s life and so sometimes you

think it’s run out because you don’t see

the

behavior but that doesn’t mean that the

emotional soil that’s fertile for the

problem isn’t still around and so it

finds its way back and so you have to

deal with what’s invisible and memory is

one of those things but in order to be

the generation that Isaiah is talking

about in 5812 that raises up the

foundations of generations we must first

be the well-watered garden that the

Bible says we should be it says he will

make you as a watered garden and then

you will go out and raise up Generations

so I need you to stop trying to repair

things when you have not been repaired I

need you to stop trying to save

everybody else when you are not well

your business is running your ministry

is popping you got the Bible study at

home you leading this over there and you

are waking up at 2: a.m. in an absolute

panic I want you to be well

first but so does God don’t confuse God

use me with God wanting to use

you he’s not a user and sometimes some

of us have lived in traumatic situations

that make us misunderstand that when we

talk about God use me because we’ve been

used which meant we were emptied out

which meant things were taken from us

with nothing being

returned and so then when we find

ourselves reaching the end of our rope

our empty vessel trying to do what we

think God wants us to do we think that

there’s something holy about that

because our definition of what it means

to be

used is

carnal but God doesn’t use Us by

draining us emptying us tapping us out

and giving us nothing in return and then

expecting us to keep going until we

collapse that may have been your father

that may have been your mother that may

have been your ex that may have been

that toxic friend but it’s not

God and so the first thing that we have

to do in Breaking generational memories

that are guiding us the wrong way is

examine whether we are receiving correct

information the reason that the garden

became a revelation to me is because

years ago when I was a graduate student

in my first Neuroscience class I saw a

picture of a neuron which is a nerve

cell a brain cell in a textbook and I

thought that thing looks like a plant

and I brought you guys a picture would

you show that first

slide

there it is look on the right is a

neuron neurons are the building blocks

of your thoughts they trade information

between them passing information one to

the next until a thought is formed and

we have about 70,000 thoughts per day so

neurons are like the building blocks of

your mind a neuron is on the right and

on the left a

sibling now this was such a faith moment

for me because I

thought do I really believe in the god

of my Sunday school

book some of you may have come into

Christ relationship and join churches

later in your life if you’re part of a

church but for me I had spent my whole

life there so Sunday school anybody else

go to Sunday school and we made oh a lot

of Sunday school survivors in here and

we colored

pictures we believe that a voice of God

told two animals to walk two by two in a

boat and that a fish swallowed somebody

and spit them up we have all these

things and we colored the pictures and

we said we believed it but do you really

believe in the god of your Sunday school

book because I felt like if I really

believed in that God then how could I

pass this image without assuming that

God had something to teach me about the

mind the Bible says he made plants on

the third day and he made us on the

sixth day so either he accidentally

swapped a

mold or God planted a garden not just

for us but within us so that before

there was a microscope before there was

any information before we had a brain

scan he had given us trees and plants

and seeds and soil to understand how we

are made it isn’t

complicated you’re a

garden and then God took me over to

Matthew Chapter 13 where Jesus tells a

story called the parable of the sewer

and in the parable of the sewer Jesus

puts all the pieces together he says

that a sewer went out to sew seeds and

they fell on different kinds of ground

there was three kinds of grounds that

had problems and he tells us that the

seeds are the words of God the soil is

our heart and he distinguishes between

the soil types by emotional descriptions

Joy anger fear it was the first

emotional vocabulary list the first

feelings wheel Jesus lists these

emotions to tell us what was happening

to the word of God that was falling and

then the plant Springs up that’s the

mind and then the fruit what we do seed

so oil plant

fruit believing feeling thinking

doing that’s how we were created to

function and so your beliefs are

actually attached to your emotional life

your heart is the soil of your life your

emotional life your well-being

emotionally is the base for how

everything else

goes and we’ve been taught that our

emotions are problems and we should

ignore them but but God made you a

garden now I know some of you are like

wait a minute wait a minute you can’t

listen to your emotions you got to get

this out that’s what the world’s been

telling us and we brought it into our

theology but when I look at my Bible

Jesus Calls the soil the heart describes

it as emotion and says when these seeds

fall how we’re doing emotionally affects

how the seed

grows and so I’m here to tell you that

the key to Breaking generational memory

and generational cycles that are toxic

is an emotional

healing Proverbs 15:13 says by sorrow of

the heart the spirit is broken that

means that not only does my emotions

show up where my spirit show up but my

emotions actually can do something to my

spirit you may have Jesus in your heart

it’s not saying it doesn’t have

salvation for you anymore but that our

broken hearts can break us spiritually

and I think some of y’all felt that how

many people have ever felt like I’m

still saved I still know Jesus

but I don’t understand what’s going on

that worship song is washing right past

me I’m at church trying to deal

something but all I feel is how hurt I

am why did my mother die why did my

brother kill himself why did the sex

abuse fall on my child why why did my

parents get divorced why did I go

bankrupt why did my business fail

because when your heart gets

broken spiritually we can get real real

confused and so the first area that I

want you to work today write this one

down to correct generational memories

that in form toxic generational Cycles

is that you must repair any definitions

of God that do not align with the word

of God because the seeds of God can fall

on the soil of a broken heart and

something that goes wrong and some of us

have been families where views of God

have been passed down that are not

script

natural because we have made up a story

to explain the problem that makes us

feel like we understand whether it

matches God’s character or

not I remember my first client that said

to me when I started out doing this work

I worked exclusively with adult

survivors of child sexual abuse for the

first four years of my work as a

therapists best work I’ve ever done in

the sense that I was honored that women

would share their stories with me but

also the degree of Freedom that I got to

see happen I love the work cuz I love

freedom and I remember one woman saying

well I know God picked

me for my stepfather to abuse because

I’m stronger than my little sister so he

picked me because I was Stronger than

her

no

no if you have a story about God

to

explain your childhood

[Music]

wounding my Bible says that we are told

by Jesus that it’s better to put a

millstone that’s a big rock around your

neck and throw yourself in the water and

drown than to hurt one of these little

ones so why would a God who loves

you make choice of a child to be abused

but we tell ourselves

stories this had to happen because X God

made it happen because X nothing happens

unless God wills it to happen I beg to

differ 1 John 3 says that sin is in this

world because the devil sins from the

beginning but for this purpose was the

son of God manifested to destroy the

works of the devil that means there are

works of the devil so that means not

everything is a work of God

and so I need you to stop trying to find

God purpose in the intention of every

bad thing that’s ever happened to you

now the Bible says God will bring good

out of it he’ll Force good out of it

because that’s how he destroys the works

of the devil but that don’t mean he

started the fire I’m sorry he did not

walk into your room and start the fire

of sexual abuse he did not walk into

your house and have your father beat

your mother half to death in front of

you he did not walk into your house and

have your family evicted and traumatize

you ever being afraid not to have less

than two jobs in a side hustle cuz

you’re so scared of being

broke not my God if that’s your God

please I want you to

meet my God

today generational trauma happen

spiritually because of with our

misguided well-intentioned wrong

explanations about who God

is I want you in the weeks to come to to

check your

story when I was a kid I remember my mom

saying and she came from that generation

my mom’s a mighty woman of God I got no

shade for her have prayed me through

some things when she came from a

generation in a church space that felt

that everything that happened the devil

must be doing it or God must be allowing

it and so when my older sister’s mental

illness persisted and persisted and her

addiction persisted and persisted my my

mom would sometimes say well I the the

devil is coming at me because I’m out

here preaching the gospel and I would be

like okay I’m a kid

okay and then one day I was out

preaching the gospel and I got a call

about one of my

children and I had to pull over my

car and I heard that saying I heard it

come to me you’re doing what God called

you to do and so God the devil’s

attacking you and it’s because you’re

doing what God called you to do and I

looked at heaven and I said God if this

is the

cost I don’t want

it if this is the cost if me doing what

you called me to do means that you’re

going to hurt my child I don’t want to

do it I said it I know I said

it and I sat there and I

wept until the presence of God met me

and reminded me of what I

know that one my perspective in that

moment was

selfish because I was seeing myself as

the target instead of my

child I got y’all I not I’m not I’m I’m

showing my mama problems I’m trying to

help somebody because that was making it

about me that is a spiritually

narcissistic perspective to have that

everything that goes wrong is because of

you don’t you you think the devil hates

your child don’t you think the devil

hates your mama don’t you think the

devil hate anybody but

you it ain’t always about you

boo I should have went straight in

intercession for my child but whoo is me

what’s happening to

me but a generational

memory a story about God that had

probably been in my family for

Generation after generation but if I

hadn’t sat there and wept like I wept

see you don’t want to let your emotion

see when I allow that emotion to flow

through me then Clarity was able to come

you try to get Clarity by suppressing

your emotion but you have to experience

and release your emotion so I sat there

and snotted and cried and said God I

quit I’ll

quit he not scared of

you holy Spirit waited for me to let my

pain

speak
