God’s design is for us to be a house on the edge of two worlds; heaven, and earth. Bill Johnson shares from Genesis 28 on Jacob’s dream of the house of God, and how Jesus is the prototype of the fulfillment of that dream. Jesus’ example is to be our standard as we bring heaven to earth.
and uh
probably two months ago now i mentioned
that i was going to be
taking time at least what i feel will be
through the summer
just to review some things that have
been important for us in
in years past and i’ve had several
things in my heart this morning and
i’m going to try to settle on one see
how that works
one of the most startling
sobering things for me to realize
is that jesus
lived with limitations even though he
was god he
has as god eternally god the capacity
to do anything but he actually chose to
live with restriction or limitation we
know that
because he introduced it he said of
himself he said
the son of man can do nothing of himself
how do you understand
the son of god can do everything on his
own but as the son of man
he can do nothing by himself
it’s important for us to realize that
because
jesus was setting a a
pace he was setting a standard he was
modeling something that could actually
be followed i know that this is
something that we repeat on somewhat of
a regular basis but i do it again today
knowing that it’s important for us to
kind of pick up the slack in any area
uh that the lord would enable us to pick
up the slack and this is
one in particular god has called us to
walk in equal measure
of power and character both
are important both are equally important
now
i am as much as anybody in the room and
frustrated with people who live
a very compromised lifestyle and then
pray for the sick and expect miracles to
happen
it it annoys me to pieces and i
understand why
a large part of the church has come to
the conclusion
that character is more important than
power i understand how i understand why
but it’s a reaction to an error that in
itself creates another error
i ask people the question all right
what’s more important then to not quench
the holy spirit
or to not grieve the holy spirit
see they both have equal measure of
value of importance
we grieve the holy spirit with sin
wrong ambition wrong selfish attitudes
we grieve him
through wrong activity we quench him by
the failure to cooperate
with divine activity
we stop the flow of to quench
to grieve the holy spirit is focused on
character
to crunch the holy spirit is focused on
power
those are the two legs we stand on i
want legs of equal length
it doesn’t make me a noble person to
emphasize
character and not emphasize power
you’ll get applause from the religious
crowd but it doesn’t produce anything
to bring about transformation and
culture itself
i was teaching a class once and the guy
i was teaching on
operating in the gifts and stuff and he
raised his hand he says
when i have more character in my life
then i will pursue
um praying for the sick healing
deliverance those sort of things so i
asked him a question i said who gives
you the right
to decide when you’re going to obey god
he said heal the sick he didn’t say when
you get your act together heal the sick
it felt like a good point to me i i i
was very encouraged when it came
out of my mouth i was encouraged
immediately
the point is is it’s not one or the
other and the very fact that we think
there’s an option
reveals the age we were born in
we were born in an age when it’s an
option
but it wasn’t for jesus and it wasn’t
for his disciples
jesus in the great commission which
we’ll look at in a little bit
told his disciples he said
preach the gospel of the kingdom declare
the kingdoms at hand
and then he said teach your disciples
everything i taught you
now in matthew 10 he taught them to heal
the sick to cast out demons
so in the great commission is the
responsibility
to do everything jesus taught them and
then they are responsible to teach
their disciples and their disciples and
their disciples
the same thing it was supposed to be
maintained
as one simple standard all through the
church age
until jesus returns
the illustration that i like to use for
this was a pastor
acquaintance of mine that talked about
uh when
uh his church was growing they were
going to build a new sanctuary
and he wanted to be involved in the
building process
so he talked to the contractor he said
is there anything i can do he
he didn’t know anything about building
but he wanted to you know clean up do
something
to help so one day finally the
contractor
told him listen um you can do this and i
don’t remember the exact numbers so
i’ll just give you an illustration he
said you can do this
tomorrow because we’re putting up this
wall we need a hundred two
two by fours cut to exactly eight feet
in length and he was happy because he
had an assignment so after
all the workers left he sat there and he
and he took the tape measure and he
measured out eight feet
he drew his line and he cut that first
board
and then he put the tape measure away
because he wouldn’t need that anymore
he’s got a nice hard
line that he can use he put this newly
cut board on top of an uncut board
and he measured right at the eight foot
mark he measured that
and then he cut it and then he took that
newly cut board put it on an uncut board
he did this
100 times it’s not a problem if you got
three or four boards to cut
but when you’re cutting 100 your 100th
board is actually over nine feet long
because every time you mark that line
it’s about an eighth of an inch longer
than the previous one
for 2000 years we make slight
adjustments to everything that’s been
done and we end up with a board that
looks
like looks nothing like the original
board
and we justify it by just saying this is
how things have changed through the ages
no
there was one measure jesus said teach
what i taught you to their disciples
let them teach the exact same thing to
their followers it’s to be one standard
from day one
to the final day one standard but it’s
been changed
what we’re attempting to do sometimes we
succeed sometimes
not so good but what we’re attempting to
do is to discover
the eight-foot measure again and do
exactly what jesus commanded us to do
in matthew 28 is a very unusual story
we’re going to use this to uh we’re
going to try to i hope to read three
portions of scripture
so if you look at matthew matt did i say
matthew 28
genesis 28 is anybody in genesis oh good
yeah don’t do as i say do as i do
genesis 28 sorry about that
all right genesis 28 this is a story
about
jacob a dream that he has and there’s a
very unusual
revelation that is uh uh
initiates something in the earth in this
moment that’s important for us
so it’s genesis 28 verse 12 then he
dreamed that’s jacob
and behold a ladder was set up on the
earth and its top reached
to heaven and there the angels of god
were ascending and descending
and behold the lord stood above it and
said i am the lord god of abraham
your father the god of isaac the land on
which you lie i will give to you and
your descendants
jump down to verse 16. then jacob awoke
from his sleep and said surely the lord
is in this place
and i did not know it that’s a lot of
church services are
like that right there surely the lord is
in this place
and i did not know it and he
he was afraid and said how awesome is
this place listen carefully
this is none other than the house of god
this is the gate of heaven
there’s a very strange metaphor being
used here to illustrate the nature
of god’s design he said this is none
other than the house of god
the gate of heaven okay um verse 18.
jacob arose early in the morning took
the stone he put his head
set it up as a pillar poured oil on it
he called the name of that place bethel
that’s a good name
verse 22 this stone which i have set as
a pillar
shall be god’s house now that’s very
strange there’s no building here
now the house of god we see unveiled in
many different ways uh throughout the
old testament and new testament
the old testament we have a temple that
solomon built was the house of god
we have a tabernacle that david built
which was the house of god
we have the tabernacle of moses i also
got the rebuilt temple of solomon we
have many houses of god
but this is the first mention of the
house of god
in the entire bible first mention always
sets a standard
here’s the bizarre thing it’s not a
building
it’s a rock it’s a rock
where jacob slept had a dream saw heaven
open
angels ascending and descending and god
spoke through the open heaven and spoke
a word to jacob
house of god
i think what excites me the most out of
this particular story
was i’m sure to jacob it was logical to
me it just
it it challenges me he said this phrase
this is none other than the house of god
the gate of heaven
this is none other than the house of god
the gate of heaven
what’s a gate a gate is a
a it’s a reality
it’s it’s something that takes you from
one reality to another
you may go through a gate from your
backyard
to your driveway you may go from a gate
in your front yard
to a public sidewalk but it’s it’s
something that
takes you from one reality to another
and yet this first mention the first
revelation
in the entire bible on the nature of the
house of god
has several elements that are important
for us to remember because
it will define everything we are
number one what is it it’s a place where
there’s an open heaven
it’s a place where there’s an open
heaven
number two god speaks through that open
heaven
number three angels come and go
there’s angelic activity that’s all
open heaven that’s all house of god
a gate on the edge of two worlds
the gate of heaven and the gate into the
hearts
lives of people it’s the house of god
look with me at john chapter 1
john chapter 1 in verse 14
it says jesus is the word of god made
flesh
tabernacled or dwelt among us so the
point i want to make
is that old testament prophecy in
genesis 28
prophesies the nature of the house of
god the initial
fulfillment or illustration of that
prophetic
metaphor is in the person of jesus
he is the tabernacle or the house of god
on planet earth chapter 1 verse 14. jump
all the way towards the end of the
chapter
and we see nathanael has this
interesting experience
his brother begs him to come and to meet
jesus come and see him
jesus saw nathanael verse 47 coming
towards him and he said behold an
israelite
and whom has no deceit there’s no guile
nathanael said to him how do you know me
jesus said before philip called you when
you were under the fig tree i saw you so
jesus is saying
hey i saw you not in the natural he
could see in the spirit
he could see nathanael inviting his
brother to come into and to meet jesus
nathaniel verse 49 answered and said
rabbi you’re the son of god
you’re the king of israel jesus answered
and said to him because i said to you i
saw you under the fig tree do you
believe you will see greater things than
these
and he said to him now listen carefully
most assuredly i say to you
hereafter you shall see heaven open and
the angels of god ascending
and descending on the son of man
notice any similarities you see this
is the initial fulfillment of that old
testament unusual metaphor
of an open heaven angels coming and
going
the fulfillment of divine purpose on the
earth through a house
that happens to be positioned on the
edge of two worlds
all right that one overwhelmed go with
me to acts chapter one
or acts chapter two acts chapter two
verse one the pentecost had fully come
they were all in one accord in one place
and suddenly there came a sound from
heaven as of a rushing mighty wind
and it fills the whole house where they
were sitting there appeared to them
divided tongues
as a fire and one sat upon each of them
and they were all filled with the holy
spirit
and began to speak with other tongues as
the spirit gave them utterance
okay what were the two
natural manifestations seen in these
verses
wind yes was the other
fire wind and fire hebrews 1
calls angels ministers of wind
and ministers of fire
come on
jesus said
you’re going to see more than that
nathanael you will see
greater things and it includes angels
ascending and descending
upon the son of man now i
have zero interest in stirring up
affection or affinity for the angelic
realm
they exist they cooperate with us it’s
foolish to ignore them
excuse me it’s foolish to worship them
it’s equally foolish to ignore them
they are not to be worshiped i don’t
serve them
but they help to facilitate god’s
assignment in our life
to ignore them as not smart
so here this comment is made
and in acts chapter 2 there is this
sound of wind and fire that comes into
the room
look at the next verse verse 6
when the sound occurred the multitude
came together they were confused
because everybody heard them speak in
his own language verse 7
they were all amazed and they marveled
verse 12
they were all amazed and perplexed verse
13
others were mocking so it’s a perfectly
described revival
right here they were amazed they
marveled
they were perplexed and they mocked
if you think you can have an authentic
move of god without those things
you are horribly mistaken
years ago i bought these little geodes
you know these little
rocks there’s ugly on the outside inside
there’s these beautiful
purple crystals and all that’s a
beautiful thing
i bought some for my kids way back when
i said this is revival
it looks ugly on the outside it’s
gorgeous on the inside
and that’s really the way a move of god
is it’s just it has to be
experienced you know you find
michael the daughter of saul the wife of
david
was up in her palace mocking david as he
was dancing before the lord
because worship at a distance always
looks weird
and she bore no children to the day of
her death barrenness took over
where there was the rejection of
sacrificial
giving unto the lord in thanksgiving and
praise giving himself in worship
we have this same kind of a situation
here
so we see in uh verse
um says the sound occurred the multitude
came together
i’ve i’ve heard throughout my life i
don’t know if i don’t know if anybody’s
taught it or it’s just been
kind of assumed but it seemed to me that
it was taught that
thousands of people all over jerusalem
laid down their
tools their toys with the kids or
whatever it was
and they all came because this sound
occurred and the sound was people
praying in tongues
that doesn’t make any sense this is an
international city
jerusalem is an international city to
have a half a dozen people
speak spanish and portuguese and arabic
and
all these different languages is not
going to draw a crowd of thousands
they’re not going to leave the workplace
they’re not going to leave their homes
to hear a sound
that is common it wouldn’t happen in
redding
not quite the international center of
the universe yet
it’s coming but it’s not quite there yet
it wouldn’t happen here and yet it
happened there
why i would like to suggest
that there was a sound
that was otherworldly
it um
there’s 120 people in this room and it
says they’re in one accord
you can have a band an orchestra
in perfect harmony with each other but
be
completely out of tune if they start by
tuning to each other and they’re in
a wrong with a note that is off
they will sound together but they’re not
right
and there’s a lot of ministry movements
that are together
but they’re not right they’re not right
because they’re not tuned
to the heart of god there’s one tuning
fork it’s not mine
it’s not yours it’s him it’s his it is
his heartbeat
there’s one note and we all adjust to
that
i’m not opposed to uh effort to be
united
i’m i’m all right with that but i i
would rather see the people of god
have effort to be in tune
effort to be into because when i find
that i’m in tune with him
i find that i’m in tune with everybody
else that’s in tune with him
the more i yield to what he’s saying the
more i yield to what he’s doing
the more i become the instrument in his
hand simply to represent him well
suddenly i found i find my heart is just
drawn to people
that have those same values those same
breakthroughs
it becomes a unity that’s created by the
holy spirit himself
so here we have 120 people that laid
down their issues and you know they had
issues
they had just days earlier argued as to
who was the greatest
there was peter who said i’ll never deny
you all these people will but i won’t
there’s all this stuff going on in this
room they get together for 10 days i
think it took him 10 days of prayer
to get things worked out finally on the
day of pentecost
the outpouring of the spirit and they
were in perfect harmony
what’s the point you’ve got 120 people
that are perfectly yielded to god it
creates a sound
creates a sound just like a skilled
musician
can breathe on the reed of a saxophone
and create a unique distinct sound and
we have
somebody else with the the horns the
trumpets and somebody else
everybody’s breathing over over that
instrument
that is in perfect tune and suddenly
there’s this sound created
that blanketed a city called jerusalem
and
changed the consciousness the awareness
the mindset of an entire city
you have people that crucified jesus
50 days earlier i’m now asking the
question
what must i do to be saved it wasn’t
just a stirring
sermon by peter i’m sure it was powerful
i i don’t want to downplay that but i’m
just saying
people left everything they had to
follow
a sound and if you can imagine standing
thousands thou 3
000 got saved so who who knows how many
were there but they all leave whatever
they were doing and they find themselves
standing
staring mocking perplexed wondering
asking questions at 120 people that are
under the influence
a sound was created that changed the
atmosphere
of an entire city and i’d like to
suggest to you that
every time you and i say yes to the holy
spirit to do whatever it is he wants to
do
we die to ourself we live to christ
every time we do that
a sound is released into a city
something happens
in the in the awareness if you will of a
city the consciousness the mindset the
value system
of an entire city begins to change as
people start to think
otherworldly why because there’s
something
in the air there’s this sound that’s
been
created that changed everything this
says
when the sound occurred one of the words
used here in acts 2 for sound
is actually the word roar so if you can
imagine here’s 120 people they don’t
know what they’re doing
they’ve been together for 10 days
they’re praying they’ve been told
they’ll know it when it shows up
they don’t know what it’s going to be
they don’t have any idea
and they’re i’m sure uh honoring the
lord praying together giving thanks
and all of a sudden there’s this sound
that comes through the room
and it changes the atmosphere of an
entire city 120 people
inebriated got more stuff done
in the following moments than they ever
could have
through their skilled gifting and i
believe in the skilled gifting i believe
in the skilled preaching of the word i
believe in all the stuff
but in this one moment this one church
service
is the one service we can confidently
say
the holy spirit was completely in charge
because nobody knew enough to mess it up
they were they were all rookies they
didn’t know enough they didn’t have any
traditions yet this is
like their first time out all they know
is they’re speaking
languages they don’t understand it
doesn’t make any sense to them
they feel strangely edified and
encouraged they’re a little bit tipsy
and they stumble out onto the streets
they’re trying to figure out what’s
going on
and all of a sudden they look out and
there’s thousands upon thousands upon
thousands
that are there and they’re trying to
figure out
why are you here it’s because the sound
was created
see a yes in quiet is broadcast in
public
a yes in quiet there’s something that
happens
to a people that just simply yield it
maybe in here
we have our worship teams lead and we
stand and we
when and we declare don’t you tell me he
can’t do it
we stand and we declare that even though
i don’t see him working he’s working
we make these decrees it’s incredible
you look at this
whole story this whole storyline if you
can imagine this
for hundreds and hundreds of years
there’s been a momentum
prophes prophets have prophesied of a
coming day
they’ve been they’ve been preparing
there’s moses who makes the cry that all
god’s people were prophets there’s
all this stuff that’s mounting this
anointing on the prophets on the kings
on the judges
all this stuff preparing for a day when
the people of god will carry
presence and power in a way that is
beyond everybody’s comprehension
it’s not just the specialists it’s now
everybody and this is
mounting for hundreds and hundreds of
years and we come to this point
where the devil thinks he wins because
he crucified
the christ three days later he raises
from the dead
and much to the enemy’s surprise the
anointing that was on the one
the same anointing is now upon millions
the biggest nightmare in all of history
happened in that moment
so this is building for hundreds of
years
and we’ve got one service that we know
the holy spirit was in full charge of
and look at what it says verse 11.
we hear them speaking in our own tongues
the wonderful works of god you
understand they’re all speaking
languages they didn’t know
but people in the in the crowd heard
them
and they said they’re speaking the
mighty deeds of god
think with me that which has been
building
for hundreds and hundreds and hundreds
of years
has its first intelligent expression
in revealing the wondrous works of god
of all the things that could have
happened in that moment of all the
things
this preceded the conversion of 3 000
people
i’d like to suggest to you that as
powerful as peter’s preaching was to
help
to bring a moment of decision for that
crowd
it was put against the backdrop of a
revelation a
corporate revelation over thousands of
people
of the wondrous works of god they made a
decision to follow jesus
because it was in the context of a
revelation
of the wondrous works of god
i’d like to suggest to you that this
unusual
story this unusual picture is actually
in a way a fulfillment of
an unfolding of genesis 28.
it is it is an open heaven
is a voice this presence
there’s people there’s angelic activity
because god revealed the nature of his
work on planet earth
is to put a house on the edge of two
worlds
you see your act of obedience
i i’m i’m not into directing angels i’m
not into
any of that stuff somebody else run with
that one that’s not me i
i love just honoring jesus
but when you obey an angelic realm
recognizes the origin of that word you
spoke
and it is their assignment to enforce it
there’s a cooperation there’s a gate
it’s the reality of this world
somehow gets released into that one
jesus announced it over himself
he himself was the prototype of the
house of god
the people of god you and me and you
shall see
greater things than these you will see
angels ascending and descending on the
son of man
can we put it this way you will see
angels ascending
and descending on the people of god
it’s not just on the gathering it’s on
the people
angels ascending and descending
i feel like part of the
great test or lesson for us
is how how easily
are we distracted from our call
by the signs and the wonders he’s
planted us in the midst of
i’ll illustrate with this and then we’ll
wrap it up
elijah
it was time for him to go home go home
to heaven
all the sons of the prophets knew it
they told elisha he’s going to be taken
from you today he says i know leave me
alone
and elisha asked him this quest or
elijah asked him what would you like for
me to do for you he says i want a double
portion of what
you want double anointing is double
responsibility
so be careful for what you ask for
it’s not twice the fun
we were born to work that’s why we can
ask for that all right
so he says what would you like says i
want a double portion of what you have
and he elijah said that’s that’s a rough
one
and then he said but if you see me when
i’m taken
if you see me when i’m taken then
then you can have it it’s interesting
if you see me when i’m taken
the next moment there’s a chariot of
fire
comes down out of heaven and it comes in
between
elisha and elijah now there’s an old
hymn that talks about
elijah going up in the chariot of fire
but he didn’t
he went up in a whirlwind what was the
chariot of fire for
to see if elisha could keep to his
assignment
what was his assignment keep your eyes
on elijah
here’s a chariot of fire see sometimes
we get involved in things
and it’s spectacular but we’re easily
distracted
away from our assignment and here’s
elijah he’s got his assignment elisha
keep my eyes on elijah the chariot of
fire comes
and he actually watches as elijah goes
up in that whirlwind
and as he goes up into the air the
mantle falls down
elisha picks up the mantle goes to the
river
strikes the water says where’s the god
of elijah the waters part it’s it’s
awesome
you want to know what’s in your mantle
hit an obstacle
it’s amazing story because we’ve been
summoned and called
to do greater things in jesus it
if it wasn’t in the bible that would be
the worst thing you could possibly say
to do greater things in jesus but jesus
himself announced it
greater things than these shall you do
you can’t do great until you’ve done the
same
there are many believers who
in in this day and age have a greater
faith for the return of christ
than they do in the power of the gospel
and what i mean by that is the return of
christ is
beyond glorious so i never want to say
or do anything
to dumb that down but what
is a frustration to me is that many
people
have a faith for the return of christ
because they believe
that the only thing that can fix this
world is not the power of the gospel we
preach
but the return of a military invasion of
god to set things in order
in other words the confidence isn’t in
the message we’ve been given
can an individual life that is
absolutely in
utter room can it be saved
not just forgiven can it be restored
restored place of sanity
addictions broken off have a healthy
family
have a healthy lifestyle can it happen
to one
then can it happen to his family can it
happen to his family in line
what about his neighborhood city
you see the point the point is is the
power of the gospel
is what is needed to re-embrace
tuning our tuning fork to the one sound
the original sound that said
do what i taught you to do teach
everyone unto you to do the same
have them to teach those that they raise
up to do the same
don’t change the standard get the tape
measure out again
and do it the way you were instructed to
do it lay hands on the sick
don’t worry about how good you do don’t
worry about how bad you do
just obey what he said to do i don’t
have the right
i don’t have the luxury to change the
assignment to what i know how to do well
most people’s ministries are defined by
what they do well
most people when they try to figure out
what their ministry is they just try to
figure out what they’re good at
not what they’re called to do
now i’m good with you doing what you’re
good at but don’t do it at the expense
of what you’re called to do well i pray
for the sick nothing
nothing happens find out why just don’t
change the assignment
well i pray and i don’t seem to get
breakthrough
pray longer get up earlier
go to bed later skip a meal you won’t
die
i shared this concept quite a few years
ago
and i’ve kind of had this
this dream
of you and me coming together in this
room
and we’ve got our teams that are so
gifted and anointed to lead us
and we worship and i love
the instruments and i love the vocals i
love all that part
but in reality i won’t worship here
beyond what i worship outside of here
and there’s a sound there’s a sound that
we carry
into our city it’s a sound of a yes it’s
the sound
can i say of a melody of a of a yes to
jesus
that is seen in your accountant it says
it’s heard
not because you sing over the fence to
your neighbor but it’s because of your
kindness
there’s a sound release it’s because the
way that you attend to that
person that’s in need it it there’s a
sound release
there’s something that happens in a city
when this many people multiplied by all
the other houses
of faith in our city when that wind of
god begins to blow
it blows across the we the reed
of that saxophone and it releases a
distinct
sound that causes people to stand that
never
would have asked the question they stand
and they say
what must i do to be saved how did they
get there
i don’t know there was a sound there was
a sound there was
there was a yes with 120 that somehow
became public
and it changed the atmosphere of an
entire city
and i believe that god is creating a
sound
over redding it’s a unique sound and
over the cities that you’re from
every yes in private becomes a yes in
public
i want you to stand because we’re going
to pray together
i uh
i i would like at some point in time
to do a full
series with you on the promised land
the old testament i love that story so
much
but let me tell you what gets me out of
that story
is that that promised land is a picture
of what you and i get to live in every
day in other words
our delight is in the fulfilled promises
of god in our life
we were designed to live with fulfilled
promises
and there’s something about there’s
something about the promises of god
in here more and more i’m feeding myself
on promises i
we benny’s my wife’s been uh listening
to uh well actually we both have but
i’ve been listening to the scriptures
being read just listening to the
promises of god
see it’s important that you that we
meditate on those that we prayerfully
we ponder we we repeat we
quote we we work until they become a
part of it
it’s like biblical meditation is the
digestive system
of the spirit man it’s what takes the
food
and translates the nutrients into our
lifestyle
where we become different we become
other
because something that he has said has
become a part
of who we are how we think and i pray
that over you
i pray that there would be something of
the promise of god
that would help to contribute to a
unique harmony
a beautiful harmony released over our
city that changes what’s possible
simply because you said yes when nobody
was looking you said yes when everybody
was looking
you said yes and in that sound something
is released over our city
where the promises of god are taken
serious
the promises of god are taken to heart
and we ponder and we think
and the nutrients of god just began to
be assimilated into our system
we think different we pray different we
expect different
it’s not rehearsed it’s not forced
it’s as organic as breathing
i was born for promises i pray that for
you
and the promise of eternal life is
available this morning
to anybody in this room that would say
bill i don’t know what it is to be a
disciple
of jesus i don’t know what it is to be a
follower of jesus
i want to be what the bible calls born
again
i want to truly be a follower of jesus
i want to know what it is to be forgiven
of god i want to know what it is to be
brought into a family
if that’s anybody in the room that would
say that’s that’s me
put a hand up and just say that’s me i
