went up together into the temple
at the hour of prayer
being the ninth hour
and a certain man laying from his
mother’s womb from his mother’s womb
was carried whom they laid daily at the
gate of the temple which is called
beautiful
to ask alms of them that entered into
the temple
who seeing peter and john about to go
into the temple say hey give me some
money
and peter fastening his eyes upon him
john said look on us
and he gave heat unto them expecting to
receive something
expecting
expecting to receive something of them
then peter said silver and gold have i
none
but such as i have
give out thee
in the name of jesus christ
of nazareth
rise up
and walk
and he took him by the right hand
and lifted him up
and immediately
his feet and ankle bones
received strength
and he leaping up stood and walked and
entered with them into the temple
walking leaping and praising god
and all the people saw him walking and
praising god
and they knew that it was he which said
it set for alms at the beautiful gate of
the temple and they were filled with
wonder and amazement
oh they just said that last week about
amazement
god’s gonna amaze you and that which had
happened unto him
can you say amen
i was fascinated because a man expected
to receive something
but what he got was not what he expected
and the holy spirit said to me to preach
the unexpected
the unexpected i don’t know who this is
for i don’t know what this is about but
god said he’s going to do the unexpected
it it it’s not going to be normal it’s
not going to be no ordinary it’s not
going to be routine
god’s going to do
the unexpected maybe you’re watching
online
and you just come another sunday because
it’s sunday but god said he’s going to
do
the unexpected
exceedingly abundantly above all you may
ask or think
that mind-blowing move of god
that disorienting move of god the kind
of move of god that makes you have to
change your plans to accommodate it
because god’s going to do the unexpected
that out of the box kind of god
that rule-breaking god that yoke
breaking god that door opening god get
ready for the unexpected
do you hear what i’m talking to you
about
spirit of the living god fall fresh on
us now as we open up the word of god we
are so grateful to you that you would
speak to us at all
let the words speak in such a profound
and didactic way that we are altered and
changed and even disrupted by what you
preach minister not just to me but
through me
flow through me
that i might deliver to your people that
which you would have imparted unto them
i thank you in advance for what you’re
about to do i believe you for amazing
things have your way great god that you
are
i believe you for it in jesus name

i must confess to you that
these are troubling times
i don’t care how much faith you have and
how much
how much you pray these are
troubling times
you don’t know from one moment to the
other what’s going to happen next
you can’t count on people
they’ll say something and then do
something completely different
and then say they didn’t say what you
heard them say

you got the tape of them saying and
they’re still act like you’re crazy and
say i didn’t say that they’ll say
that you didn’t see what you saw even
though you saw it and say it so long if
you’re not careful it’ll make you wonder
did you see what you saw when you saw it
because i have never seen so many people
be absolute in being absolutely wrong

it used to be that we had some absolutes
some truth that we could build around
some areas that we would not touch in
order to gain momentum some areas were
sacred and untouchable but now anything
goes
to get ahead
these are troubling times
because we have hurricanes where we used
to have sunshine
tsunamis where we used to have beaches
these are troubling times because we
have ice where we used to have heat
and heat where we used to have ice
these are troubling times because the
the world we’re living in is so
unpredictable that we had to leave our
water running last night and tomorrow
it’s going to be hot
i don’t know what to wear
i feel like wearing a fur coat with
shorts

i’m just totally confused because i
don’t know what’s going to happen next
all of the absolutes are being changed
and even though we are citizens in our
own country sometimes we feel like
subordinates
sometimes we feel second class
sometimes we feel mistreated sometimes
we feel
unheard
it’s not just a matter of race
but also status
it seems like if you have enough status
you can get by with doing anything
you can be guilty and not go to jail if
you got enough status
you can be innocent and go to jail if
you don’t
and these are troubling times i don’t
know what to teach our children to
expect
because i am unsure
and if i act like they didn’t bother me
at all i’d be lying to you i want to
confess to you i have faith i believe
god i talk to god but sometimes i’m
troubled
sometimes when i lay down i’m in trouble
sometimes when i get up in the morning
i’m in trouble
i would be a lot more troubled if it
weren’t for the word of god
i confess to you that i used to come to
church just to come to church but now
the word of god is often my therapy
it’s my therapy it’s my detox zone it’s
it’s where i get my head together it’s
where i chill out it’s where i’m
reminded that that the world has been
crazy before
it’s where i’m reminded that the
the prophets of old worked against
adverse conditions and circumstances and
still called fire down from heaven
still cold water out of a rock
still grinned into a city and turned the
city upside down it’s important to me to
read that and the more i go into the
word of god it is more than reading
bible stories i become more fascinated
about the circumstance in which the
story occurred
in the text today the circumstance that
surrounds the story is as powerful as
the story itself
this generation of jews
have been have lost power
in their own country
they’re on their land but they are not
fully deputized and empowered to be able
to function in their environment they
are oppressed by rome
oppressed to a degree not totally
oppressed
not like their forefathers who were
oppressed in babylon
they’re oppressed at home
now it’s one thing to be oppressed in a
strange country
and it’s another thing to be oppressed
in your own house
to be on your own turf in a familiar
environment and not be empowered in your
own situation
such were the times that they had to
come to the roman government and say
mother may i before they did anything
because they were not in control in the
same territory
that they owned
they were a colony
of rome
and this colonization this notion of
colonization had caused them to be
kind of patted on the head
rome said we’re going to control all the
money but you can still have church
that it’s almost as if church became
worship became a pacifier
while rome took
control and it had been that way such a
long time
that you couldn’t tell
where the government ended and the
church began
sounds a lot like today
in fact they called it herod’s temple at
one point
when did herod
get to have a temple
and now herod is making money
off the temple the reason jesus turned
over the tables wasn’t because they were
selling cakes in the back of the church
the reason jesus turned over the tables
is because herod had brought his hand
into god’s house
and was making money off of people who
just wanted to worship him
it was nothing wrong to bring an
offering but herod was taxing them
on their giving
and when jesus saw what government had
done to church he turned the tables
upside down i don’t know i don’t know i
don’t know but i think today if he were
to come in and see what’s going on in
the church world today that it’d be some
tables flipped over
in the floor
because we have confused the gospel with
our perspectives
and now if you don’t agree with me
you’re going to hell and you don’t even
need a bible verse to send me all you
need is an opinion

colonization can be a damnable thing
that’s why our country was founded
resisting it started out not to be
states not to be its own government it
started out to be 13 colonies
who rolled up and protested against
great britain and said we refuse to be
an outpost
of another country’s government
and fighting and fighting and fighting
back until finally in 1776
they warned their independence
we didn’t have ours yet but they had
there

i’m just telling turning like it is
the jews at this point wanted their
independence
even those who followed jesus did not
just follow jesus so he could perform
miracles and do tricks like a magician
they had an underlying motive when will
you restore the kingdom really meant
when are you going to give us back
control
of our own land
the coming of the messiah and the
calling of him the king of the jews gave
them hope that they would stop to be a
colony of rome and that he was strong
enough to fight back
but he didn’t
he died

they beat him a half to death
rome did
and the lord of glory died
and how do you preach
a powerful message
when the one you’re preaching about
got beat to death
and died
thomas said i’m through with it
and you blame thomas and you talk to him
about it but i’m not too hard on thomas
cause there are things there is a hurt
that can hurt so bad that shakes you
down to your toes and you don’t even
want to be in anything that reminds you
of that kind of pain again maybe you
have lived long enough to have that kind
of pain but there there is a pain that
becomes so tough that you don’t even
want certain pictures in your house
there is a pain that becomes so tough
that you’ll block the face off of the
media you don’t want them to pop up on
facebook you don’t want them to come up
on instagram there is a pain that
becomes so tough that you don’t want any
sign of it again and thomas said unless
i feel the nail prints in his hand and
where i pierced him in the side i will
not believe it
and jesus showed up because he
understood thomas’s disappointment
judas hung himself
peter went to cousin
everything was coming apart all hell was
breaking loose
and still he rose
still he rose he had come into his own
and his own had received him not
he had stood on the mount of olives and
weeped over jerusalem and said oh
jerusalem one of the few times that
jesus cried incidentally oh jerusalem
jerusalem how oft would i have gathered
you as a hen does her checks but ye
ye
my brethren
would not
we’re not
we’re getting ready to celebrate the mlk
day
and it’s a wonderful thing
but a lot of people who are celebrating
him in death
did not respect him in life
and i’m not just talking about white
folks either it was some black folks
that didn’t accept him in life he was
controversial in life it’s amazing how
after you die everybody names stuff
after you

jesus has now died and rose from the
dead but he only showed himself alive
to believers
and after showing himself alive for 40
days with many infallible proofs he
stepped on a cloud and ascended into the
heaven and left him looking up at him as
their dreams went up in the air
you men of galilee the angel said why
stand standing here gazing at me this
same jesus that you see us sin shall
descend in like manner go and preach the
gospel and you shall receive power acts
1 and 8 after that the holy ghost has
come upon you and you shall be witnesses
not power to dance not power to beat the
tambourine not power to start your own
choir not power to make a name for your
ministry you shall be witnesses unto me
witnesses you don’t need a witness
unless you’re on trial ye shall be
witnesses under me i’m gone and i’m
still on trial i’m gonna be
controversial even after i’m gone ye
shall be witnesses unto me
in jerusalem
in judea and samaria
and utter most parts of the earth
you should be witnesses under me and so
what we see here
is peter and john coming up
in a last-ditch attempt to give
jerusalem a final chance to recognize
jesus as messiah
jesus was through with it
he said not one stone will be left
standing upon another i’m done with you
i’m out of here
peter and john are coming to the
synagogue at the hour of prayer
peter and john is not just anybody they
are part of jesus inner circle
there are a few things that jesus did
that peter and john and james were not
at
they were there at the mount of
transfiguration
they were there in the garden of
gethsemane
they were jesus inner circle sometimes
you can’t take everybody with you
oh that’s worth writing down right there
sometimes you can’t take everybody with
you
when you know who you are you have to
have an inner circle
that kind of insulates you from outside
influences peter and john were the cream
of the crop
these are not just anybody
this is not bartholomew or somebody this
is not matthew or somebody this is jesus
choice
coming to the synagogue and our prayer
now they are not coming to the synagogue
because they agree with the synagogue
the synagogue has rejected jesus
they are apostles of jesus
so it is the clashing of kingdoms that
they would have the audacity
to come to the synagogue to preach what
the synagogue thought was a cult
so they did not expect a warm welcome
they did not expect that
and the synagogue did not necessarily
expect that they would have the
audacious attitude to be able to walk up
into their assembly to preach something
contrary to what they believed
and they did not expect to run into the
lame man at the gate
and the lame man who had been laid daily
at the gate did not expect to run into
them
so everything that happens in this story
is
unexpected
if you would have told the synagogue
that peter and john were coming they
would be shocked they were not looking
for them
if you would have told peter and john
that they would stop outside at the gate
call beautiful and expend their
anointing on a no-name beggar who had
been laid daily at the gate from his
mother’s womb
they did not expect it
there was no appointment on their date
book for this to happen
oh y’all don’t hear what i’m saying
but god and his sovereign ability to
orchestrate the affairs of men sets
appointments and don’t necessarily tell
you that it’s an appointment you just
walk into it and it happens to you and
once you’re in it you begin to recognize
this is a divine setup
i didn’t know that meeting you was going
to change my life

i didn’t know that meeting you would
change the trajectory of how i see
myself i didn’t know that i would have
the kind of encounter having met you
that would disrupt how i defined myself
but such is the text
because the lame man was used to being
the lame man
what do you do
when you are referring to
as a lame man
what do you do
when you are referred to
as a drug addict
what are you what do you do when you are
referred to
as a cheater and a whoremonger
what do you do when what you do becomes
bigger than who you are
oh y’all don’t hear what i’m saying
and until somebody can name your
weakness and everybody in the room know
who they talking about

this is the lame man everybody knew it
the people in the temple said we know
that’s the lame man who’s begging at the
gate they didn’t say that’s fred wilson
that’s charlie johnson
that’s michael frederick no they didn’t
call his name they called his condition
because the condition had defined who he
was
have you ever had a condition
that defined who you were
that had swallowed up your name
that everybody referred to you whether
in your face or behind your back
what you do not who you are
such is the case
with the lame man
he is not lame in many ways
even though he has spent his whole life
begging
his hands were not broken
he had no problem stretching forth his
hand
there was nothing wrong with his brain

he was not blind like bartimaeus
his spine was not twisted
he was not sick with palsy
he was not paralyzed
in fact 90
of his body was functional
it was just his ankles and feet
isn’t it funny how one thing
[Music]
i know y’all don’t know what i’m talking
about
so sit there look real confused won’t
nobody know that you got a thing
that that that affects every other thing
in your life whether it’s a mouth or a
temper or a doubt or an attitude or
a disorder one thing that you know about
yourself that limits your movement your
activity your growth your opportunity
that stops you that brings you to your
knees and in spite of everything else 90
being strong and healthy 10
can take you down
one thing being broken in your life can
take you down that’s why it’s not good
to turn up your nose and start talking
about people because everybody got
something that don’t work right
yeah yeah i’m a preacher today everybody
got something that don’t work right it
might not be obvious it might be covered
it might be camouflaged it might be
camouflaged by the accruments of your
success or your accolades or your
degrees or your finances or your beauty
until people don’t notice that you’re
beautiful but you just a little bit
crazy
that you can quote all of the bible but
you have trouble living
certain parts it was just his ankles
but his ankles had shut down everything
he might as well be paralyzed all over
his body
because this one
part didn’t work i’m wondering if you
are honest enough
to admit that something don’t work right
good at speaking in front of people but
i’m bad at handling money
i’m great at having money but i can’t
stand to be around people
everybody has something in their life
that affects everything else because
life keeps asking you
to function in the way that you don’t
function
what happens when you have to function
in a way that you don’t function
you create
a way of coping
with what you can’t correct
and so what we see in the first
sentences of this text is this man has
set in place a coping mechanism that is
built around his dysfunction
blind people do it
moving furniture around to fit blind
people handicapped people do it putting
bars in the bathroom so that you can
move from the wheelchair and move over
to the seat everybody has a way of
making adjustments in their life to
accommodate their deficiencies
little ways of doing things i knew when
i got married that i could not safely
marry a mouthy woman
so every mouthy woman that dated me i
said not her
not her because i don’t i’m gonna i
don’t want to be locked up with bobo not
her
you gotta know what don’t work right in
you i’m not i’m not against mouthy women
it’s just not for me
cause that’s a trigger for me
you get up in my face
shaking your neck
[Applause]

and the district apparently gonna have
to come get me i i just
you gotta know what doesn’t work
for you
i don’t want no dumb woman who can’t
think and can’t help i want you to be
strong i want you to have your opinion
but i don’t want you up in my face
breaking glasses and stuff
cause i might forget
[Applause]
i’m just telling i’m confessing my
ankles i’ma show my ankles today i might
forget
i might forget i’m telling you don’t do
that i might forget
you can’t do that
you you you don’t
set yourself in situations that you know
are too big for you
that you know you can’t handle you don’t
knowingly send the cookie monster to
work at the cookie factory
and then be shocked because he ate up
the cookie you knew i was a cookie
monster when you hired me

you don’t hire a child molester to work
in pediatrics
[Applause]
when you know that something doesn’t
work in your life you make certain
adjustments to accommodate
[Applause]
your issues
so that you can be in an atmosphere
where at least you can survive
this man has never walked
he is not a person who used to walk
he has no memory of standing up
he has no mental cognitive memory of
standing up
his muscles have no memory of standing
up
his nerve endings have no memory of
standing up whether you know it or not
your body has a memory if you work out
all the time and you quit for a while
and go back to working out it doesn’t
take long for your body to say oh we’re
doing that again and it starts giving
you the strength to do what you used to
do it has a memory his legs have no
memory of ever walking
he has been lame he came out of his
mama’s belly
with his ankles broken
and so
he has devised
a system
and the system
has caused him to surround himself
number one with enablers
enablers are the people
who carried him
every day to the same place
the enablers were the people that you
select in your life that support you in
your crippledness
they make it convenient for you not to
do better
[Applause]
i’m a mess with you now enablers are the
sugar daddies
[Applause]
or mamas
[Music]
[Applause]
of lazy people who could work but
enablers
are the people
that make it convenient for you not to
have to believe god for better somebody
shout better
you’ll never get better as long as
somebody is carrying you
i would respect him better if they said
he crawled to the gate
[Music]
seeing as his knees worked in his hands
were he could have crawled to the gate
but no he has this group of people who
carry him to the same place and in some
ways they are as crippled as he is
because there are people that don’t want
you to get better because if you got
better they wouldn’t have a job y’all
don’t even
i’m gonna mess with you a little bit
there are people who make a living off
of your dysfunction and they’re counting
on you to be lonely and they’re counting
on you to be desperate and they’re
counting on you to call them at two
o’clock in the morning and they’re
counting on you to need them in that way
or they lose importance

he was laid daily carried
ain’t nothing wrong you can’t move
he was carried daily to the same place
you know you got enablers
when they keep taking you
to the same place
the names might change
to protect the innocent
but they keep carrying you
to the same if you own your third
husband and all of them beat you
[Applause]
you got to stop saying what’s wrong with
them and look in the mirror and say hey
what’s wrong with me that i keep
attracting this same
type of person and allow them to
[Applause]
oh y’all ain’t gonna help me preach
today that’s okay i’m gonna get there
i’m gonna get there
their job was to lay him
at the gate called beautiful
never anywhere else
they never took in all of his life
he has been laid in a conspicuous place
where the righteous would walk past him
and feel sorry for him
he is living off of the benevolence
of people who care
he has to be in close proximity
to compassionate people
to work them
it is the same reason homeless people
hang out outside of restaurants
because they know you just ate a
five-star meal and you come out and run
into them they know you’re more apt to
feel guilty
that ain’t no mistake there ain’t no
accident
they’re not hanging around at the
shelter
they’re hanging out at the places where
you eat
so that you could belch and feel bad
and reach for your wallet
and and they got to do what they got to
do but some of us
are beggars
without caring signs

and we hang out around certain types of
people
because we know they are compassionate
enough to carry us
and we don’t have to use what we do have
that’s working
because they are so compassionate we can
just be helpless
i just can’t do it i just can’t get up
i just can’t stand up i just can’t go to
school i just can’t take it i’m just not
that kind of person you want to eat

certain men laid him daily at the gate
called beautiful these are the people
that you designed in your life to create
an ecosystem of dysfunction
not one of them on any day
challenged him to get up
everybody carried him
nobody pulled him
nobody took him by the hand and yanked
him and commanded him to walk
everybody around him made allowances for
his deficiencies
excuses for oh mama you just don’t
understand him he’s really a nice guy
i know he don’t work a job but he he he
he’s a wonderful person
we make excuses
for the dysfunctions we choose to keep
oh i’m stepping on toad i can tell i’m
stepping on toes cause when i get right
in the middle of your toe you get quiet
i know he’s 35 and still living with me
but one day he gonna take off and fly
like a bud

he don’t buy groceries
he don’t pay rent
he don’t help
[Applause]
are you an enabler
who
are you an enabler have you told
yourself a story to justify somebody’s
dysfunction never challenging them to do
what they’ve never done because they’ve
never done it before
you cease to expect it
the depth of expectation limits
productivity
when i give up on you doing better and i
make adjustments for you and i go ahead
and build you a room and give you a key
so you can come in the basement and feel
like you’ve grown while i pay the bills
i have set up a system
that does not allow you to evolve
and from his mother’s womb to this
present moment this man has gone through
the same routine
the vicious cycle
of needing somebody to help you the
vicious cycle of using people as a
profession
the vicious cycle of getting over the
vicious cycle of putting your weight on
me hey excuse me i already got to carry
me
now i got to carry me and you

it’s not fair for me to have to carry
me
and you
and you don’t feel bothered by me
carrying you
this is the way it’s supposed to be and
this happens every day i don’t get a
weekend off i don’t get the holidays hey
it’s mlk day monday can i not go monday
is there any day i don’t have to carry
you
could you do something to add value
could you paint the porch
could you take out the trash
could you clean out the refrigerator
could you do something to add value in
my life must you always think that i am
the national bank of commerce

there are certain people
that have set up a system of dysfunction
and some of you have a loving heart and
you keep trying to help them and you
keep believing that they’re gonna get
better and they are taking advantage of
your compassion
and this is a hard cycle to break
because the cycle is a system and the
system is a circle and every day i pick
you up you know where we’re going and
every day i get you in the evening we
you know where we’re going because we’ve
been in a cycle for years and neither of
us expects it to change
it is into this environment
peter and john come
but i believe that the picture of the
lame man is a picture of the synagogue
[Music]
because can i take my time with this
the synagogue has been functioning for
years
with an outer court
and an inner court
but no glory in the holies of holies
they were just missing a little bit but
they had learned how to function without
the
glory and the synagogue was just as lame
oh y’all don’t want to hear me
the synagogue was just as lame in its
religiosity as the lame man at the gate
called beautiful so we got a lame man in
front of a lame church
[Applause]
and he fits into this lameness
because how can a lame church say
anything about a lame man
[Applause]
both of them have something that doesn’t
work
and into this lame condition
peter and john
now come
the problem with peter and john is that
they are not enablers
they are evangelists
evangelists are not enablers
because true evangelists we don’t have
many anymore
most of you have never seen a true
evangelist
you see speakers who speak multiple days
but a true evangelist is a disrupter
a true evangelist will turn the church
inside out
a true evangelist is not an evangelist
because they hoop they’re not an
evangelist because they raise money
they’re an evangelist because they carry
you somewhere you’ve never been before
and asked you to do something you’ve
never done before and people get healed
and people get delivered and people get
saved and people get set free and a true
evangelist is not like a sunday morning
service held on a thursday night a true
evangelist
disrupts things changes lives marriages
are reconciled people are getting
breakthrough people are getting
delivered people are getting help i have
to describe it to you because you can’t
find it anymore

you got these gunslingers with bibles
who will work for money
but a true evangelist will come in and
disrupt things
[Music]
peter and john came up to the temple at
the hour of prayer and they run into
this man they haven’t even got in the
church they came to disrupt the
synagogue
but before they could get to the
synagogue to disrupt the synagogue they
now have to disrupt this man
who is a picture
of the synagogue
they’re just standing on either side of
the gate laying on this side lame on
this side
they can’t get to the lameness over here
for the lameness over here
can i go deeper

i know this is a familiar text
but i’m gonna drain it dry
[Applause]
i’m gonna pull on it
i’m gonna yank on it i’m gonna squeeze
it and i’m gonna squash it
i’m gonna squeeze it till it fits your
situation i’m gonna squeeze it until god
talks to you i’ma squeeze it until the
holy spirit arrests you i’ma squeeze it
until god says to you you can’t have
another year if you’re gonna keep on
having folk carry you to the same place
in order to have a new year you have to
have a disruptive experience that asks
you to do something that you have
settled in your mind that you cannot do

peter and john come up with our prayer
and the bible
says
that the lame man here comes this word
looked on them expecting
to receive something
but but but what he was expecting
fit into the cycle of what he called
normal
i want to spend a minute talking about
the enemy of normal
normal is an enemy
every believer should flee from normal
because if you walk with god your life
should not be normal
when you walk with god you should not be
ordinary when you walk with god you’re
not supposed to fit in the clique when
you walk with god you ought not be like
everybody else when you walk with god
every day is a new day when you walk
with god he does amazing stuff when you
walk with god he opens doors
unexpectedly when you walk with god he
lets you meet people you never thought
you would meet when you walk with god he
puts you in situations that you weren’t
even qualified but god has ordered your
steps in such a way that every day is
exciting when you walk with god there’s
a spirit of gratitude that comes into
your life because your life is not
normal and it is not routine when you
walk with god god will always do the
unexpected
can i go deeper
i have all kind of journalists that ask
me i want to follow you around today so
i can see what life is like for td jakes
in a normal day i said you can forget it

you walk with jesus he does the

anybody in here who’s spiritual enough
to have walked in the unexpected

ideology because i serve a god who hates

raises up the dead he goes to weddings
and turns water into wine i serve a god
who’s able to do exceedingly abundantly
above all you may ask or think have you

pays taxes out of the fish’s mouth have
you met my god
he refuses to bound the whipping post
have you met my god he prays for the
people who crucified him have you met my
